So mining btc sounds like it's not very profitable, but the altcoins are supposed to be easier to mine and use less electricity and expensive hardware. So would it be smarter to just mine easy ones and trade them for btc?

I don't think many coins trade with fiat, Eth and btc do, maybe some others.

You can deposit and withdraw straight into an exchange, but there are reasons some people may not want to or be able to.
