British Raj

Was the British Raj good or bad for India? How would it have compared to rule by other European powers in India?

Russia should have been rule over India. Shame that Sasha decided to backstab Nappy.

It was good for Britain, global trade and industrialization

Bad for Indian people.

Don't listen to delusional contrarians who'll say life in British India was perfect and beautiful and British rule was 100% benevolent. It wasn't.

The British do deserve credit for having the better standards in colonial africa, though.

>backstab

Christ francophiles are delusional

Most likely that there wouldn't be an India without but it is impossible to deny that British rule brought harm to the people so way it how you choose.

Well India would still be a massive number of petty independent polities at odds with one another under despotic princes instead of a single state with a bunch of corrupt, incompetent bureaucrats. Britain wasn't particularly awful by any colonial standards. People who use the idea of famines and plagues forget the absolutely absurd size of the Indian population relative to the number of British administrators. 23 year old Oxford graduates would be put in charge of millions of people individually.

can you imagine the indians with russified names, like you see in central asia and the caucasus? especially the sinhalese?

ajay vijayevich vishaprakhadravidanov

and all of them moving to moscow or sawing logs in siberia. the whole country would reek of turmeric, vodka and vomit.

good because they didn't let the indians poo outside of the loo

India today is much better and has vastly higher potential than it ever did in Raj-era.

Anglos have to beg India to launch their satellites and not the other way around. Independence has done miracles on their country.

Modern Britain is a raped corpse.

I am glad for India, but don't compare today's Britain to the past. This country is a joke and slave to US.

Modern India and Hinduism wouldn't be here without it

It would be something completely different

>tfw US will never be part of the New British Empire
>tfw both have gone down the gutter

>The British do deserve credit for having the better standards in colonial africa

That's like winning the contest for having the smallest dick.

Saddest part about that picture is that he will probably become PM in 10-15 years time.

Consequences of British colonialism

If the blow-back from Brexit is a strong as some are predicting, he will be PM in the next 5 years.

Even the Monarchy is in on it at this point.

>post independence India spends much more on welfare than before and gains a better life expectancy.
>this is somehow due to british colonialism.

It's due to British technology and the opening up of global trade by the British, yeah.

Unless you really think that Pajeet was selling his spices to Han on his own before colonialism

"India" has been trading allover the world though since forever.

>when you realize that the silk route and the chola empire were created by the british.

imagine being this edgy

yes and no, india has been a destination for traders since forever sure, india however played no large part in the trading itself except as a market, europeans or arabs went to india and brought and sold goods making a profit india itself made little.

mixed, day to day life was marginally improved in some areas - medical care and general administration - and got little worse in others while britain unified the country from a bunch of squabling statelets into a unified nation, however the british did economically exploit the place and were more than a little racist in administration, giving preference to muslims in many job roles.

but still as in all colonies it was better for india to be ruled by the british than any of the european alternatives

>imagine being this edgy
This Prince Charles guy is edgier.

>LOL i told my Christian subjects to think of Muhammed at Christmas time!

>india has been a destination for traders since forever sure, india however played no large part in the trading itself except as a market, europeans or arabs went to india and brought and sold goods making a profit india itself made little.

People traded with Indian states. It was a fucking huge part of trade ffs are you that ignorant? They traveled allover East Africa and other parts of Asia. What's with the revisionism?

It's completely true and it still sucked hard.

Ask yourself, if it was that good would they really have wanted to be rid of it so badly?

> what is maratha empire
