they did some shit i saw a picture of everyone saying how good they were but italy i think it was was like wow um lol they kicked our ass umm this is awkward so i dont know much but yeah you couldlook it up

Germany invaded them for not paying denbts

If they're not lucky it'll happen again

>What did Greece do in ww2?
Defeated first batch of fascists, got defeated by the second batch

>How significant was their role
Not much, Balkan was secondary theater.

lick their wounds from losing to the Turks in WW1

Greeks BTFO the Italians, forcing the Germans to intervene and BTFO the Greeks. While their performance against the numerically superior Italians was impressive, in the end the greatest contribution they could be said to have had was in tying up a German army for a while.

Mussolini demands that Greeks surrender their lands and received a big fat OXI (TN: oxi means no). Mussolini then invades Greece through Albania but got his shit pushed in so hard and Greeks gain land instead, marking the first allied victory.

Mussolini then seeing how the situation was hopeless for him asks for Hitler's help who was also preparing for operaion Barbarossa. Hitler then delayed his plans and had to cross through Yugoslavia to get to Greece which cost him a lot of time. Eventually he conquered Greece but he still had to deal with Crete which was very costly to him since he not only had to deal with the Brits and the Greeks but the Cretan populace as well who beat the shit out of any German paratrooper that landed. This also led to Hitler reconsidering ever using paratroopers again.

tl;dr Greece indirectly saved everyone in WW2

Meme-tier history my man, go write a cracked article or something

iirc Mussolini didn't even have a choice in the matter, Hitler intervened without Mussolini's opinion because the defeat in Greece was making the Axis look bad and gave hope to Germany's enemies

>meme tier history
Are you denying that Greece gave a big morale boost to the allies for showing that the axis war machine wasn't invincible as they thought of? Also delaying operation Barbarossa is debatable but there were even Nazi officers who admitted it

Everybody already knew that Italy hasn't been relevant in terms of military might for over 18 centuries.

>morale boost
Didn't occur until El-Alamein

>delay to Barbarossa
Both debatable and ultimately inconsequential to the operation

After Greece fell to the Axis powers, a lot of Greek forces joined with the British in the Mediterranean and Middle East theatre and took part in many battles and operations.

>"The Sacred Band or Sacred Squadron (Greek: Ιερός Λόχος) was a Greek special forces unit formed in 1942 in the Middle East, composed entirely of Greek officers and officer cadets under the command of Col. Christodoulos Tsigantes. It fought alongside the SAS in the Libyan desert and the Aegean, as well as with General Leclerc's Free French Forces in Tunisia. It was disbanded in August 1945 but is the precursor of the modern Greek Special Forces."

Also Greece at the time had one of the largest merchant fleets which was used for carrying troops and supplies. Some of them took part in the Normandy landings

Greeks also had many resistance groups that caused quite a bit of disruption and harassment to the Germans.

spotted the Golden Dawn cuck

Don't bother OP
Veeky Forums hates Greeks

>being patriotic means you support a gang of far-right retards

>meme tier history
>you are goldan dawn lel xD

We fucked up Italy while using pre ww1 equipment
Nazis diverted 700k soldiers, 1000 tanks and 700 aircraft to beat people that used donkeys to transport ammo
German paratroopers got BTFO in Crete
Greek resistance movement kept Axis busy
We lost 10% of our population through war and famine

And what did we get as a thank you?
A civil war through Operation Gladio, thanks a lot NATO, come again!!

But...I-I am greek...

Ah...the closet fascist,always a classic..

if he was a closet-fascist wouldn't he support the actual fascists?

>that used donkeys to transport ammo

So what?

Using pack animals was literally the norm for every fucking army except murricans. What do you think, that the wehrmacht was entirely motorized and mechanized? More than 2/3 of the army relied on horses for logistics when barbarossa began for fucks sake.

>fascists
>in Greece
lol no the core members of GD are only a very small minority and they got voted into the parliament not because people here support their ideology but because they were sick of the same old politicians and voted them out of spite.

>muh relevancy
Suck it up Alexios, nobody cares about you much like everyone talks shit about my country. Be glad that our occupation was the softest imaginable, we pretty much played cards with your POWs to kill the time.

>being proud of your country who fought in WW2 against FASCISTS make you a fascist
off yourself

>who beat the shit out of any German paratrooper that landed

They did win the battle of Crete because they managed to take one airfield and get resupplied.

Greece was fascist as well during WW2.

They pushed Mussolini's shit in until Hitler marched down with the Bulgarians.

While not that significant it did help slow down Barbarossa and probably saved a lot of allied lives in the long run.

I do have a question though for you all, why didn't the British turn over Cyprus to the Greeks after the war?

>all this fash bash
>those retards don't know that based Metaxas was a Fascist himself

>Nazis diverted 700k soldiers, 1000 tanks and 700 aircraft to beat people that used donkeys to transport ammo

The WWII German Army was 80% horse-drawn.

>why didn't the British turn over Cyprus to the Greeks after the war?
Because MUH BRITTANIA MUH WAVES
Dumbass morons ruined Cyprus in the long run.

>german army used lots of horses for logistics
That's something I didnt know, so I guess this makes the Greek and German army equal right?? Thanks for addressing all of my other points though cunts

>metaxas was fascist
Not exactly, if he was one why didn't he ally with Italy then?

They fucked Italy's shit up, but then again anybody can do that really.

Metaxas was pro-fascism but he preferred to stay neutral. It wasn't until Mussolini and his autistic dream about reenacting the Roman Empire that caused Greece to join the allies.

>Metaxas was pro-fascism
Being authoritarian doesn't necessarily mean you're a fascist

Metaxas had the army and the king as support so it's very different from a fascist regime

this flag looks good.

>flag looks good
There is a crown and a cross on it so no

>inb4 you want hammer and sickle you fuggin gommie xD

Different times and ages, we must not get personal.

>cross is bad
*tips fedora*

Why didn't the Greeks want constitutional monarchy like the UK and Denmark?

I am Greek.
Greek history is a clusterfuck. Everything was kinda personal so it's hard to find objetive stuff.
It was just situations after situations.

we had a referendum about it in 1974 where we said no

In a nutshell, big divide between right and left due to civil war after ww2 as well as not all right-leaning people wanting the king for a variety of reasons.

Greece was never a kingdom until 1832 when UK, France and Russia decided we are one and gave us a king from Bavaria. We also had another revolution in 1843 where the Greek army made the king give us a constitution. Greeks always felt that the king was a foreign element in a sense

Why didn't we listen?

My great-grandfather fought alongside Greeks in Crete. He said it was brutal as fuck. It didn't sit well with him evacuating the island but there were German paratroopers all over the place.

>Τι σημαίνει αύτο;

A lot of rebel stuff of various politicall colours, kept Germany occupied, fucked up Italy, gave troops and ships to the allied cause against Rommel, had a big civil war, hungered.

The commies in the Greek resistance spent more times killing anti-communist partisans than actually resisting the Germans. In the end they still got cucked, because the Brits made a deal with Stalin that Greece was not to fall to the communist sphere of influence, but still they created a lot of trouble during the postwar era.
