it seems like its much ... better to gamble on alt coins that are dirt cheap and hope they go to the moon, than to put money into eth/bitcoin and slowly watch it go up.

worst case you lose out on a grand or so if every low priced alt coin you buy doesn't turn out to be anything, but if it does, you strike gold, and with bitcoin and eth you're buying in in so high that the return takes forever to turn around

Do both. Altcoins are risky but could have an insane return. The bigger ones (BTC, ETH) are guaranteed to go up, and have a slightly less insane return, but still absolutely crazy compared to any other sector
