Before Ceausescu Romania's abortion policy was one of the most liberal in Europe. But when the communists rose to power they decided that Romania's declining population was too much of a problem to allow this to continue and made abortion and contraception illegal except in a few circumstances and retooled sex education to promote the benefits of parenthood.
What followed was the largest baby boom in Romanian history, but a burden which was bared almost exclusively by the poor, as the wealthy could find ways of circumventing the ban. The communist orphanages were pushed way past their capacities due to parents abandoning children for the sheer reason that one more child would have financially ruined them. 22 years after the decree a huge underclass of impoverished revolutionaries rose up and deposed the communist regime. The average age of a revolutionary? 22 years old, part of the baby boom that Ceausescu himself created.
Romania was the only east-European communist country with strict anti-abortion and anti-contraception laws at the time, and also the only country whose ruler was violently overthrown and killed at the end of the Cold War.
The moral of the story: having a pro-life policy is retarded if you stop caring about the infant after its born because all you're doing is forcing poor women to raise the next generation of revolutionaries who will overthrow you when you are old and weak.
