Economy actually started collapsing and going deep into debt during the last few years of his rule, once again proving the long term ineffectivenes of socialism and, just like any other time when a leader with a massive cult of personality dies, it crashed after 1980 because he was the glue to keep the crumbling country together.
A good leader has a good legacy, Tito however relied too heavily on the people looking up to him as if he was a deity, thus he doomed any following leadership to fail.
Its easy to put Stalin in his place when you aren't directly threatened by the USSR like the other communist countries were, due to Yugoslavian position.

Anyway, sounds anecdotal as hell.
The Yugoslav communists started their revolution before they even started the fight against the Axis forces - as they were still allies at that moment. Throughout the war, they murdered civilians and got rid of all opposition so that after the war was over, they could take complete control. Thousands more were murdered after the war. Any opposition in the country was met with arrests; many were sent to prison camps such as Goli otok. The federation ran on international loans, the socialist economical system leading not only to much slower economical growth than in the West but also influencing the society as a whole for decades to come.
