I think /pol/acks are fond of the Sapir-whorf hypothesis. If a low IQ ape like me can learn this language, surely it means it is not the best language for thought and logic. This means Americans should strive to learn other languages. Maybe Latin or something closer but easier like French?

I don't know what your iq is, and English is a broad language, with many words. I doubt you could articulate it as well as someone smarter than you could. But really I do not think Iq is relevant to language, unless you are a poet or something.

Who says that the best language has to have an IQ threshold to learn it? The best one would be one that anyone could learn, but perhaps not master.

The way I see it is that other languages are equal to mine for the most part, so there is no reason to waste brainspace assigning the same concepts to different words/symbols.

There isn't as much of a necessity for us to learn a foreign language compared to other countries. The rest of the world speaks English, plus we're a physically large country and are geographically isolated from any country that speaks a language other than English or Spanish, which is the most popular second language by far for Americans.

I can speak a little bit of Spanish, I took two years of it in high school.

Believe me. English is so easy compared to other European language. Try learning German or Russian.

But what would I gain from that? Those are niche languages at best, and I would be wasting brainspace in my opinion.

American here, I find Spanish seems for the most part to be more logical than English, the spellings and pronunciation of vowels is so much more consistent. English spelling is retarded, half our words need to have their spelling changed from some inconsistent bullshit that made sense 500 years ago but just makes things difficult now.

Learning languages is good for the brain. You gain access to different cultures. If you learn German for example, you can read Goethe in the original. If you know more than one language, you'll realize that translations are approximations at best. Translations lose all the beauty that is contained in the original work. The author crafted those sentences to fit in his language. He is a master of his language. Translations are only an approximation.

Not to mention the amount of entertainment that is only available in certain languages.

Continuation from my previous post: Learning a language while you're an infant is nothing like learning a language when you're an adult. When you're younger, your brain is like a sponge. When you're an adult, you learn the language in a more methodical method. I've learned your language when I was 15 yo. Way past the age where people can retain a native accent. If you don't believe me, try to learn any European language. You'll notice that you only studying the grammar isn't enough. You have to talk in the language. You have to read grammar of the language. And this is only the writing part. You'll have to listen to hours and hours of the language audio to get it.
I had trouble to learn your language because I taught it myself. I always knew more than my teachers. But nowadays I try to learn German and I see how English is so easy compared to it. No cases and the verbs are not even inflected. Only the third person, but it only a s. And only a few irregular verbs.

That's true, but it doesn't mean you're intelligent. You don't even need to study languages, that's how basic and simple they are. You could drop me anywhere in the world and within a year I could speak basic shit and after a few years I would be fluent.

That's how rudimentary and intrinsic language is to many animals. You don't even have to study it, your brain is wired to pick it up.

To elaborate, I could maybe judge your intelligence if you learned a foreign language in a couple months, but eventually learning a language after years of studying says nothing about your intelligence.

Because one would have to learn it by themselves, the school system does not properly teach a foreign language.

Even here in Canada, where French is an OFFICIAL language (and not even an irrelevant official language like Finnish in Sweden), I can only recall a few words of French being taught.

One could be put into French immersion courses, but that essentially requires one to be upper-middle class (or, at least everybody in the stream was upper-middle class).

I only learned to speak the language (I cannot read it beyond product labels, because those are everywhere) because I married a French girl, and she essentially forced me by only speaking to me in French.
