Through much of history families would pay men to marry their daughters, holy men and such would raise dowries for girls so they wouldn't have to become whores, families would fight over the few grooms who put themselves on the market, women had to be wrapped up in ridiculous outfits like gifts and presented to men in the hopes one of them might fall for the marriage meme.
