What's the history of the relationship between Sudan and South Sudan? Should South Sudan be it's own nation or is partition a mistake?

Nobody south of the Sahara should have independence.

South Sudan never wanted to be a part of Sudan and spent most of its history within Sudan waging a war of independence. They don't share much in the way of history either; South Sudan was basically the trans-Saharan conquests of Egypt in the 19th century.

It's sad that independence turned out so poorly for South Sudan but we shouldn't take that to mean being a Sudanese colony was meaningfully better.

Sudan and South Sudan politically were not aligned.

Sudanese are largely Nilo-Saharan and Arab as well as Ethio-Somali, cushitic and some Bantu.

South Sudanese are largely Nilotic and some nilo-saharan.

The two are Nile cultural civilizations, both are in continuum with one another but the great Sudd and the economies diverted the trajection until about the Shilluk and later the Sennar who were a force to be reckoned with.

Talking to ferenji about Sudanese caste and prestige lineages is complicated but suffice to say it's a mess.

South Sudanese is filled with opposing tribes and chieftains, the Sudanese enemy United them but now the vacuum is having them fight for power.

South Sudan was necessary, Sudan cared nothing for them but there was also Israeli and American forces seeking independence force power play reasons.

Darfur and East Beja dominated Sudan should seek independence though, but will deal with the same floundering former feudal and warring groups face when catapulted to nationhood.

People act as though this minor peace post WWII is some European constant when really they've been warring petty kingdoms for ever just about.

Yeah we all know Algeria and Egypt are bastions of economic development and civilization
