The Eastern Bloc was pretty comfortable after WW2. There weren't any shortages until shit fell apart in the late 80s.

Because the West had access to essentially the entire resource wealth of the third world! Moreover, their economies were substantially more developed than those of the Eastern Bloc prior to the Cold War.

The only socialist countries which were properly developed prior to WW2 were East Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, and these were ravaged by the war and had to be rebuilt by the Soviets, alongside the devastated USSR itself.

In the current liberal economic order, no third world country has been able to develop on its own. The only poor countries which are now rich countries are those in East Asia and the Middle East that Britain and the USA poured tens of billions into. And all of those economies were developed through highly illiberal capitalist means.

The perceived collapse of communism was probably one of the biggest setbacks to societal change and it will be considered as such by future generations. And the enemies of communism have trampled over its remnants like ants paving over it in hopes that it stays there.
