If you are proud of your people, that does not mean that you somehow think that you had a hand in events a hundred years ago, but rather that you recognize the uniqueness and success of your people and thus wish to propagate your people.

I highly doubt pride is the source of their ineptitude, but it is certainly a source of motivation. This phenomena is more observable on smaller scales. Often family fortunes are squandered in 3 generations but sometimes they stave off the decadence and become "old money". Others pass on useful knowledge and attitudes and steadily accumulate capital.
