Mormons

Does anyone have any interesting information of the history of the Latter Day Saints?
They seem pretty out there, but other than some stupid stuff like Donny Osmond and that South Park episode, they aren't really discussed much.
Would love to discuss it with some Mormonfags, if any even exist.

Don't fuck with mormons, they're fucking crazy

my brother converted to Mormonism.

He also happens to be insane so there's that.

Mormons genocided a bunch of white settlers in the west while being dressed as Indians, look up Mountain Meadows massacre. Some of them also settled in Mexico a long time ago and are now armed to the teeth and fighting against the cartels. Robert Jay Matthews, the nazi guy from the Order who robbed banks and killed a bunch of kikes in the 1980s was also a Mormon, and generally A LOT of the armed preppers / survivalists in the west are Mormons. As a whole they're pretty batshit crazy.

I live across the river from Nauvoo. I know a lot of Mormons.

In 18wheneverthefuck Joseph Smith found gold tablets left by the Angel Moroni. He translated them from an ancient pre-Columbian language with the help of divine interpretation.

They contained an entire third testament set in pre-Columbian times with Hebrew new world settlers and fictional native tribes and histories. Jesus even spends the three days between death and resurrection in the new world.

It's an odd movement.

I once talked to this Brazilian Mormon once and from what I remember him telling me was there is a heaven, and like a super heaven. The super heaven is for the most pious and devout Mormons while regular heaven is for everyone else and the not so pious and devout Mormons.

That's all I remember unfortunately.

>Some of them also settled in Mexico a long time ago and are now armed to the teeth and fighting against the cartels
Could you give more details on this? Sounds interesting

>Mountain Meadows massacre
>By this time the emigrants were running low on water and provisions, and allowed some approaching members of the militia—who carried a white flag—to enter their camp. The militia members assured the emigrants they were protected and escorted them from the hasty fortification. After walking a distance from the camp, the militiamen, with the help of auxiliary forces hiding nearby, attacked the emigrants and killed all of them that they thought were old enough to be potential witnesses to report the attack.

wtf i hate mormons now
seriously though what the actual fuck was wrong with them
Paranoia over the State and Federal Governments trying to kill them. Something that was justifyed a bit given that 10 years earlier there was literarlly an exeuctive order to exterminate them

>The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the state if necessary for the public peace--their outrages are beyond all description. If you can increase your force, you are authorized to do so to any extent you may consider necessary. I have just issued orders to Maj. Gen. Willock, of Marion county, to raise five hundred men, and to march them to the northern part of Daviess, and there unite with Gen. Doniphan, of Clay, who has been ordered with five hundred men to proceed to the same point for the purpose of intercepting the retreat of the Mormons to the north. They have been directed to communicate with you by express, you can also communicate with them if you find it necessary. Instead therefore of proceeding as at first directed to reinstate the citizens of Daviess in their homes, you will proceed immediately to Richmond and then operate against the Mormons.

-They had a quasi secret society/vigilante group that were also used as secret police called the Danites

-Joseph Smith was a third party candidate in the 1844 presidental election however his campaign was cut short after he was lynched by a mob 7 months before the voting took place

-A splinter group of Mormons took over Beaver Island and ruled it as a monarchy

-They spent a good deal of money in the 20th Century buying what turned out to be forged documents that would have embarrassed the church if they were made public.

-Mormons believe in continuous revelation and to this day have active prophets. Which is how they were able to modify their stance on Polygamy

Yep Mormons believe there are three levels of heaven Celestial, Terrestrial and Tilestial

Lord above, that sounds like something an even crueler Joshua Graham would order.

I don't care for them

it's funny, they managed to start a slew of indian wars because of one of their wagon trains losing a cow that wandered into an indian camp, while also later slaughtering a wagon train of non mormons

fuck those guys

I like Mormons. They're interesting.
Man, that makes the Massacre a lot more understandable.

pity it didn't' succeed

Mitt Romneys family members, they are romneys

A interesting way of looking at anti mormon sentiment in that time is to compare it to anti semitism.

The Mormons were disliked because they were very insular and lockstep when it came to supporting other Mormons. Hence they always voted in a unified block and worked together to dominate trade and business which gave them vastly larger influence than their small numbers would ordinarily allow. Combine this with a different but simmilar religion and you get the perfect recipe for conflict.

Of you want to hear the hilarious story of how an offshoot in Michigan set up his own "Kingdom" and then later got raided by a bunch of drunk Irish Michiganians who fucked his conclave up just because he was a weirdo check out James Strang

no joke, this is exactly what hasidic jews do in new york

thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/534/a-not-so-simple-majority

That's what Jews do everywhere. It's why people don't like them.

Its a very effective method of action and doubly so in societies where the majority do not.

it's a great way to get yourself justifiably hated

Without a doubt, however modern Mormons seemed to have found a nice balance in the US.
