The sell orders that were set up didn't stipulate the minimum they would sell for. So the price dropped past their limit, they sold automatically, but by the time THAT triggered, the price had already crashed all the way down to nothing

stop losses, it's an actual technique for people to go "stop loss hunting": investopedia.com/terms/s/stophunting.asp

It allows you to cause drops in prices, so you can enter in at lower price (and you're assuming prices which shoot back up). Causing a flash crash, with the intention of buying in at lower prices is kind of similar.

I was on margin with ETH/USD on both Kraken and Bitfinex. Nothing happened there. The incident was isolated on GDAX.

This same thing happened on Kraken at the early part of the year with bitcoin so be careful, I advise against margin trading specifically because of things like this, its just not worth the risk to me.
