When Goldwater's campaign picked the slogan, "In your heart, you know he's right," they were fucked. It sounds like a veiled admission that maybe he's not actually all that right, and then the Johnson team spun it into "In your guts you know he's nuts," and that was that.

"Extremism in the defense of liberty ins no vice" was the icing on the cake.

And should be noted that it was not produced by the campaign -- an "independent expenditure" group made it.

But airing it once got it on the news, and that was all they really needed. It was out there.
