The great Russian writers (Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, etc.) were mostly from middle class backgrounds/lower nobility. Bolshevism and then Stalinism imposed worse censorship on artistic expression than what existed even during Tsarist times, which was already bad enough. Soviet communism ended up stabilizing after Stalin and actually allowing a large middle class to emerge, but that stability, of course, only lasted for about 4 decades.
