The Meiji government rewrote the incident in history books saying the "black ships" were westerners arriving in Japan, but it was actually aliens. If the aliens wouldn't have left Japan before the 20th century, the axis powers might've won WW2.
The Bakumatsu was a war between the shogun's armies and the aliens, but since the aliens had advanced technology, the shogun lost and the tokugawa shogunate fell apart, leading to the Meiji era.
