It's as valid a term as most contemporary political designations honestly. You're certainly seeing a lot of pointed, targeted bullshit from journalists painting the group as homogeneous, but I don't think many of them understand besides the obvious bias. Richard Spencer is being treated like a leader because he was involved with the Deplorables' Ball, etc, and because he's a visible, easy target with tons of baggage and stupid things to exploit.
