Also, telling Croatia to get stuffed was very much against the Spirit of Veirsalles; and they could not give a piece of Turkey to Italy because Atäturk kicked everyone out.

Diplomatic skills and chivalry with the prisoners, italy used to save the live of their prisoners, even russian prisoners were treated well, most of times, and soldiers in russia when they scout to search food in the houses or farms but the conditions were so shit that they usually gave their rations to the kids they found. So basically when they were capture by the enemy they were usually treated better then the germans.

During WWI, the Italians really wanted Dalmatia, and Britain and France promised them that. My guess is if the Italian government and population knew how little the British and French were going to give them, they would have stayed neutral.
As for WWII incompetence, Rommel said that the average Italian soldier was fine, but the Italian officers were shit. I think that has to do with Mussolini's purges.
