If the layperson thinks it's ugly, it is probably ugly. It can have significant meaning for deranged "high culture" mentals that LEARNED to appreciate it, but if the average person can't appreciate it with their heart it's homosex.

The original purpose of art was to either depict/chronicle something (down since the earliest cave drawings), or to impress and leave people in awe, which is why Gothic or Baroque religious architecture is some of the highest form of art. Walking through a brutalist structure doesn't impress anyone, it makes you feel depressed and disgusted.

Stalinist architecture and general aesthetic was generally very fine, look up Stalinist Gothic. All those monumental choirs, beautiful and impressive propaganda posters and massive, ornamental buildings that you typically associate with that Red Alert Commie Chic are Stalin's legacy. The architecture itself borrows heavily from neo-gothic and art deco for example.

Then in the 60s a new breed of commies emerged and they hopped on the French modernist bandwagon and started copypasting shitty prefab commieblocks and disgusting brutalist slabs of concrete everywhere.

Greeks and Romans didn't use those columns simply because they looked good. It was practical. They might as well have been steel I-beams with some grooves on them just to make them look a little better.

I know that in my commie country the commieblocks were a explicitly a temporary measure, and the richest commie countries (Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia) actually built a shitload of detached housing because they could afford it, while in the USSR which was generally poorer they only built commieblocks. In a bizarro world where communist countries actually become wealthy and the system doesn't economically collapse you can bet the commieblocks get phased out as quickly as possible.
