Tell me about John Sobieski

Tell me about John Sobieski.

Why did he go to Vienna?

He answered a cry for help in time of need

Remove kebab

To invent croisants tbqh.

He spent his entire career shilling for France and against the Habsburgs but when he got elected King he discovered that the French are against weakening the Ottomans because they want Turks to be a threat to Habsburgs.

Devoid of French support in trying to contain the Ottoman threat to his country he ended up signing a defensive treaty with the Habsburgs.

He came to relieve Vienna to honour this treaty once the Ottomans attacked Austria.

He also wanted to improve his son's position by marrying him with some imperial princess but it didn't work. His teen son accompanied his father in the campaign and was part of the great charge at the battle of Vienna, but when they met Emperor Leopold after the battle and Sobieski introduced his son the giga-autist Leopold snubbed the lad completely. As in, he literally didn't reply to his greeting or even acknowledge his presence.

Then he tried to use the war against the Turks to carve out Moldavia as a principality/kingdom for his son to inherit but that failed too.

Poland was becoming isolated politically, so he threw in with the Hapsburgs at the last minute.

It went great for everyone involved because his kingdom was partitioned some decades later.

112 years. Apparently out of sympathy. Thank God that happened though. Without the Austrian participation particions would still happen but there would be no Poland today.

>112 years
89 until the first (and from the Austrian perspective the largest) partition

to be fair to Leo he was an Emperor, arrogance was part of the job description

To exterminate turkroaches

To get to the other side

>when they met Emperor Leopold after the battle and Sobieski introduced his son the giga-autist Leopold snubbed the lad completely. As in, he literally didn't reply to his greeting or even acknowledge his presence.

source?

dickish if true

Because if he wouldn't, Poland would likely not win a war against Ottoman Empire, and it's obvious that they would be next.

He was a big guy

he wanted to focus on regaining Prussia but ottomans decided to stick their brown dick into the european history yet again and ruined his plans

Kind of shitty to do that to the guy who came at the head of an army that saved your capital from getting sacked. What an asshole.

Sobieski said that's how it went in a letter to his wife after the fact, he was shocked at Leopold's behaviour.

They didn't get on at all. If it hadn't been for Marco d'Aviano (the Venetian monk serving as the papal envoy to the Emperor) working as a mediator the alliance would have fallen apart. Both Leopold and Sobieski liked and respected him.

Actually now that I think about it the campaign letters on both sides are pretty interesting since Sobieski is restless and keeps ranting about things not going his way, others being noncommittal, shifty and indecisive, and basically goes "WHERE ARE THE TROOP PROVISIONS WHY ARE WE STANDING AROUND WE SHOULD BE BESIEGING THINGS LET'S GO ALSO DUDE WHERE'S MY RESPECT" while Leopold was equally restless doing his best Hamlet impression like he always did and going "ON NO WHY DO I HAVE TO MAKE DECISIONS WHAT DO I DO SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME NO NOT THAT GUY, SOMEONE ELSE LET'S NOT BE TOO RASH".

It was an alliance of a simple minded glory seeking cavalryman and a neurotic indecisive aristocrat paralysed by overanalysing every single situation.

Actually if ottomans wanted they could have beaten the poles before vienna but they never cared for poland because most of it was empty steppe anyway.
Ottomans were always planning to go further into western europe.

Also Leopold probably didn't mean to insult Sobieski or snub his son, he was just a huge sperg and didn't know how to react so he didn't.

>Actually if ottomans wanted they could have beaten the poles before vienna but they never cared for poland because most of it was empty steppe anyway.
Wrong.
They taken Podolia fortress and enforced tributary status on Poland, if they haven't poked the PLC the nobles probably wouldn't bother about another one of Turk attempts at taking Vienna.

It wasn't intentional, Leo was just an autist.

*My father has a copy of a 1950s book in Latin which includes transcripts of Marco d'Aviano's correspondence with Leopold around the Vienna campaign.

Does anyone know if there's an English version of those? If not I'll try to get my hand on the book and make some scans/translations.

sobieski got rare special permission from pope to read erotic stuff and porn after vienna
