What is the purpose of the prison system?

What is the purpose of the prison system?

Rehabilitation or Punishment?

The purpose is to segregate low iq sociopaths from the rest of society that is good and functional and productive.

A reasonable compromise between the two.

isolation
rehabilitation
punishment

Deterrence

Criminal punishment has a variety of purposes depending on the crime and the judge's assessment of the convicted's character.

this

Monetary revenue.

people who whine about muh pointless punishment seem to forget most of us don't want to be neighbours with a burglar or rapist

I always hear Americans talk about how strict their marijuana laws are. 10 years and a felony for a gram of weed? That can't be right. Why are so many Americans in jail anyway?

This

Between Private Prisons and the fact that going to prison will basically ruin your reputation forever no matter what

If you go to jail once you're better off going back to jail

>10 years and a felony for a gram of weed? That can't be right.
That's not the whole story. In reality they are given two warnings and then a felony.
That seems fair to me. If you have such disrespect for the law you ignore two warnings then desu you deserve more than just 10 years

Nixon's War on Drugs.

because humans are incredibly dangerous animals and the only reason your 400 lb ass can sit safely in your mom's home being an edgy little shit on the internet is because you are protected from people who would kill you in a heartbeat by people who are better at violence and have morals

Getting 10 years for a drug that has no overdose and it is not lethal. A Drug softer than caffeine, alcohol or tobacco. Yet it is listed as more dangerous than Cocaine... A Drug which can have medical uses. It being penalized is already quite stupid. 10 years for having a bit of weed is straight out draconian.

It's anti-nigger law

It is also not very cost effective. The thousands of prisoners that have been imprisoned for marijuana charges cost the state a ton of money for doing something less harmful than smoking cigarrettes.

If it's so soft then they can stop using it.
Oh wait, potheads don't because they don't give a shit about the law.
They deserve the fire of Allah desu

Sorry?

You are retarded. Pot is still a drug ofc and it can be abused. But there is really no point in it being illegal anymore. If Pot is penalized so should alcohol be (which would be insane, we already know it does not fucking work). Even if you disagree with it's consumption it being depenalized and legal ways for its acquiring are provided you will deal a big blow to narcotraffic (most smokers would rather buy from a legal source than the bloody dealers we all hate) and a huge weight would be lifted from the penitenciary system. Just look at how Uruguay handled the issue.

It was for rehabilitation before American capitalists did their magic.

In the USA, people don't really care about rehabilitation or even the good of society in many cases. They just continue to believe in punishment, sometimes justifying it with the belief that more punishment is in fact the greater good, despite vast evidence to the contrary. They aren't interested in looking at this evidence; they'd rather keep eating from the trashcan of ideology.

To produce BUTTFUCKING, in order to maximize the total degeneracy of the world. Once those poor bastards get out, they think that it's all right to fuck women in the ass, producing deformed mutant retard assbabies.

Prison is nothing more than an illuminati plot to fill the world with defective turdpeople.

Punishment obviously.
If rehabilitation was the purpose there would be no need for proportional punishment, everyone would just be incarcerated until rehabilitated
And if the purpose was deterrence, the punishment for every crime could just be death.

Revenge is a basic human need that every functional government needs to supply.

Separation of criminals from law abiding citizens to maintain a general status quo, which more often than not produces a stable society, which more often than not produces happiness (or something resembling it)

Depends on the crime. Personally, it should be for the protection of society more than anything else.

>from the rest of society that is good and functional and productive.

>implying the rest of society is good and functional and productive

Is that how you console yourself in front of the mirror everyday blubberbutt?

deterant and satisfying a tax paying victim's desire for justice, primarily.
rehabilitation is just an optional goal for most.

but it's more about securing the law rather than to seperate good people from bad ones.

Not even him, but I think he's paraphrasing the old line:
>people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf

Depends on where you live. Generally rehabilitation is more effective.
