Read up on what is a currency and what is money. Its not the value of the things, its about how much stuff you can get with it.

Gold and silver is money, crypto is a deflationary currency designed to retain value, fiat isn't either.

Faith and backing by goods or services. In small Chinese village I read about, there were coupons issued to old people by the local community and shopkeepers that were used as payment to the local youth to help the old people with chores and all manner of odd jobs. At one point they were worth more than the Chinese currency.
And that's why we back fiat with gold, so at least it's backed by something other than hope and the sweat of our backs.
If someone invented a food that came in small pill form and never spoiled, I would start using that as currency. I'd be trading a handful for a plate of red lobster.
