The Moors in Hispania were a mix of Christians and Muslims but the invading ones from North Africa were Berber and Arab. Morrocans today who are mostly Berber can claim North African ancestory.

Saharan often were black and it's stated as such, the Mediterranean coast was not so much by the greco-roman period. But south Morocco in the Draa was black from recorded history so much so that amogst some of the old Moroccans I know that they use Draa to mean very dark ethnic Moroccans.

Because who ever was doing the illustrations didn't even fucking know how they looked like, the fact that they're dressed in western knightly attire should be fucking telling enough. The just painted what was familiar to them.
I wanted to post that painting of Jesus Christ carrying the cross where the roman soldiers are depicted wearing 15c full plate armour to illustrate my point but I can't fucking find it anywhere.
