His PR amongst the French, which then was mirrored on how the remainder of the world thought of him, was torn to shambles by Victor Hugo (the hackiest hack of French litterature, but regrettably, our most read author), and that he should probably be regarded as one of the top 5 French leaders ever was done away with as easily as that.

For some background, Republican-minded Hugo fled into exile to England when Bonaparte ascended to power in 1951, and autistically consumed the following 30 years screeching at the top of his lungs against him, expounding over many treatises ('Histoire d'un crime', 'Les chatiments", etc...') on why it was he hated the man. When the Republican system was brought down on France again in 1871, politicians so to speak would line up to sing praise to Hugo, for "having remained to the cause", and all aligned with his misplaced hatred for Bonaparte; and it's been that way ever since.

they didn't. during the directory during 1794-1799 neo-jacobins attempted several coups against the government. the movement more or less persisted among the artisans of paris and was institutionalized in the form of the national guard militia established after Napoleon established it after his escape from Elba in 1815. some groups still thought of themselves as jacobins in the nineteenth century while others like the proudhonists, saint-simonians and blanquists were similar to the jacobins in varying degrees. the last hurrah of the jacobins was the Paris commune in 1871, which was led by an amalgam of the aforementioned groups, including neo-jacobins. As their prospects became dire they even voted to form a committee of public safety in imitation of 1793 in hopes that this would galvanize the communards enough to defeat the republican forces. it didn't work though in the end and the moderate republicans won and dismantled the national guard once and for all after seeing how the national guard became radicalized and provided the basis of support for the Commune.
