As someone who has actually played these games, I feel I should point out that the assassins are not necessarily the good guys and templars not necessarily the bad guys. They're both essentially benevolent, albeit with bad seeds.

The first game was pretty good - strange warrior cult of personality doing the bidding of a strange old man. Have some higher principles, but certainly weren't "goody two shoes"

Then you start throwing in every major historical as either belonging to one or the other camp, this nonsense writes itself.

The crusades were also an interesting time in History, I thought the settings didn't improve after it.

Yeah, I missed the bus with AC and only played the first game after several sequels were already out, but I really enjoyed its stealth/parkour/hack'n'slash mix and its morally ambiguous dual storyline, despite finding the gameplay just a teensy bit rough, and too easy. So naturally I was very keen to try the sequels, but they took the exact opposite path to the one I was hoping for. They made the Assassins just generic good guys who kill bad guys and are also super good at fighting and they can totally beat like an entire army but they choose not to because they're too SECRET so they sneak through the shadows to deliver JUSTICE to the EVIL TEMPLARS. They also made the ridiculousness of the outfits scale with the ridiculousness of the story, and made the games even easier with even more overpowered and unrealistic gimmick weapons and equipment. I mean come on, a fucking pocket glider? Not to mention
