The Helmet design came from Nazi Germany. It was conceived as an improvement to the more traditional Stahlhelm. Nazi Germany never had time to switch helmet designs before the war started, however, so the switch never happened. East Germany adopted the design because they wanted something that was visually distinct from the Stahlhelm.
