Whereas in most "flavors" of communist ideology, the Proletariat is beleaguered factory workers working in industrialized nations, Maoism has a decidedly more rural bent. The rural peasantry is the proletariat. This was a huge factor in the Sino-Soviet split. Mao was deeply suspicious of the USSR and their factories and cities and urbanization. To him, all the signaled capitalist influence. If you weren't a rural peasant, you couldn't be trusted.

Modern adherents of various Marxist ideologies dont necessarily have much to do with theoretical particulars. Democratic Socialist in modern america, for example, basically means "youngish social democrat/progressive". So don't worry too much about the details, because they don't actually matter. (Think religious sects.)

All that said, most Maoists get into this idea about third worldism, which sees the planet as basically those in colonizing countries and those being colonized. Some will go so far as to argue that working people in the US and Europe (and Australia and so on, you get the idea) have as much chance of being revolutionary as any wealthy billionaire.
