The idea of imposing checks and balances on the rulers through making a part of the general population having the right to vote on certain issues is good. But direct democracy is a meme, and is no different from mob rule.

Democracy is flawed and ineffective because by you can't wait on the entire population to vote for every decision, and the majority will inevitably oppress the minority. A democratically elected republic is the best way to go.
