DDR was the true continuation of the Prussian militarist state. The NVA was handed a state with which to crate the strongest possible army with which to crush western Europe in event of a war. Other Warsaw pact countries were consistently impressed with the discipline of the NVA and would request officers to help train their troops. the DDR was also one of the biggest contributors to equipping and training communist guerillas in the western hemisphere, superseded only by the Soviet Union and on par with Cuba. obviously quality of life wasn't great, such was not the purpose of the DDR as a state. It existed entirely to execute the final stage of Communist expansion into western europe and the destruction of Capitalism, and would have succeeded at this task given the opportunity.

The economic miracle of Western Germany is a fucking myth, based getting your ass blasted with American money and profiting of cheap labor from the East.

The Soviets were actually less destructive of German culture in East Germany than Americans were in West Germany. Soviets just preserved existing German institutions and pretty seamlessly integrated them into the Soviet system. East Germans were never really taught to hate themselves. Western denazification on the other hand instituted a campaign of cultural decimation and psychological brutality on an unprecedented level.
America has always been the primary evil empire.

It wasn't all bad. Families were given bare land and could live of it. A very communal livestyle that promoted aligning your interests with each other. It was hard work but you actually reaped what you sowed and naturally distributed the surplus in your community, where the state wouldn't notice. Everyone had some kind of usefull profession and role.

It was only when the given land got economically valuable, that the state would take it away, nationalize it and overwork the workers and land till it's bare again. That was the cycle in rural parts of the GDR.

In order to hold ever growing civil unrest down, stasi and propaganda had to gain power in equal proportions. That sowed distrust and suspicion. What the state hated the most, was ironically the church

It wasn't as bad as most people say, there was a better healthcare system and poverty practically didn't exist.

There was literally no unemployment in the DDR. Everyone got enough money for healthy food and heating which can't be said about Germany today.

Once you accepted the fact that you will never leave the zone, life was pretty utopian (expect you could via Mongolia, but only few people knew how).

Sure we didn't had those awesome stuff Westerners had and the state leaders were dumbfucks, and the party was pretty conservative. But their inability to adapt, which was the reason the state ceased existing in the end, was why we could enjoy the few freedoms that we had. Because whenever something new came, they never knew how to react to this.

If the right people came to power, the DDR would've been a neat place. But Ulbricht was a cunt and Honecker an idiot. And those two were the only ones we had.

I'm one of the anti-German posters but it's just bantz. I love German culture, including Prussia and East Germany.

As far as I know it had some of the best living standards in Eastern/Central Europe, along with Yugoslavia. People weren't rich by any means and certain goods like cars and bananas were hard to come by, but everyone generally had housing, a job, education, healthcare, and food. People couldn't leave, and the Stasi would quickly be on to anyone who got out of line, but after 1971ish you would mostly be harassed or possibly imprisoned rather than outright murdered.

Literally wasn't like that except possibly in some ways during the Stalinist era. A lot of this is exaggeration though.

There was no debt in Yugoslavia, everybody had at least apartment and a house. Debt is now. Yugoslavia had very simple credit system

Hungary was colloquially known as the happiest barrack in the Eastern block due to perceived greater freedom and quality of life its citizens enjoyed. Compared to other soviet countries, Hungarian human rights record was relatively clear and the people enjoyed many amenities and were unkown to chronic shortages and long queues. Lot of alternative culture was tolerated to a degree, best described by Kádár's slogan "Who is not against us, is with us".

Yugoslavia was left leaning state that played footsies with both west and east. A combination of ideology and geography gave the country more importance on the world state. This is not very easily replicable.

Also you are vastly underestimating the economic problems of the state near the end. Also it was held together by a single person, without him there was nothing holding the country together. This shows him less like a genius and more of an autocrat who didnt actually resolve ethnic, religious divide. To be fair to Tito, I doubt anyone could have but still, it was as good as it could get.

No, Yugoslavija contained Kosovo, which was a total shithole. Macedonia and Bosnia weren't much better either. Serbia was so so. Parts of Croatia and Slovenija were rather decent I guess.

I was with a woman who grew up in the DDR, from Schmalkalden. We were together for a little over two years.

She said it was just fine. No poverty, no bread lines, everyone knew they had a place and future. She also fondly recalled how society was more involved, that your commie block neighbors would just invite you in for coffee at any time if needed something, or that schoolmates would check on eachother if they were having trouble getting to school on time, that sort of thing.

That's not necesarilly true.

Berlin was hot, but most people had homes or apartments for life in their towns, and god jobs for life. You just couldn't speak out against the socialist system (they were not were not were not Communist) or the state in any serious way. Everyone got western music, watched west-German tv, you could speak freely with your neighbors. The Stasi wouldn't come get you in the night.

You could also do some limited travel, like to vacation in Hungary or the Czechoslovakia.
