Why were other countries so slow at getting into colonization? Did it take them 100 years to figure out how to sail? They just let Spain take all the gold and spice provinces

Spain and Portugal were literally the only countries that could into oceanic sailimg for almost 50 years. Also if you add the Canary Islands and the Azores were literally perfect to sail to America you have your answer

Other countries didn't have enough colonial range at the time

>not setting naval tech to 100

get on with the times, we use mana birds now

Shit this fucking pissed me off when i first played as England. I finally have enough colonial range but there is nothing left to colonize because fucking spain took everything

Just steal their colonies, it's the English way

just take greenland and jump into north america, there should be plenty left if you do it early

And Portugal did with less then a million souls. Im Dutch and i find that the Portuguese expansion is fary tale-like

>united kingdom
>no scotland
>no ireland

England & France: Busy with 100 Years Wars (& consequences), in case of England also War of Roses
Netherlands: Belongs to Spain
Germany: Fragmented into duchies & bishoprics

On top of that, Spain had absolute naval supremacy over the Antlantic. Why challenge such supremacy? More importantly, with what means?

>no Genoese colony in Crimea
>no English colony in Crimea
>no ventian colonies
But it was mainly because of the treaty of tordessallas which divided new lands between the Portuguese and the Spanish and to go against this was to go against the pope

Spain was just an exceptional empire. They were the ones who invented steel, books, the compass, and sails capable of long distance travel. It's why their armada was so feared for centuries in Europe and why they were able to take whole empires in the Americas with just a few hundred people.

>English colony in Crimea
w-what?

>Spain had absolute naval supremacy over the Atlantic.
That was Portugal, from southern Canary Islands to South Africa

Spain interestingly found more silver than gold.

Start at 39 minutes in, answers a lot.

Spain had the largest military. They controlled the in and out of the mediterranean. For a long time people from all over the mediterranean went there and used it as a a proxy state for business. Spain went through some political strife and portugal became a quarantined proxy state. The Franks combatted Spain by putting central European powers against it. However England an old ally of Spain got the trust of the Netherlands. However, a shaky relationship. Soon UK became the Spain of the Northern Kingdoms. Meaning you had to war with UK or ally yourself with them to get to the other side. Spain was just fascist it sold everything. They didnt care until the purity question was asked. Spain was said to possess the only ships that could even go from west to east mediterranean (levant). Its written even 2000 years ago. For the most part the Nordics including the British Isles were pagans and wanted to be left to themselves. The Vikings the first settlers of Russia were called "seasonal" wanderers. They didnt stay in one spot as their lands were barren. Russia spread eastward due to it having people of royal ottoman ancestry. They were turks and conducted business with siberian turks. However one side betrayed the other. You know religion...

For the most part the ideal Iberian/Moroccan system was very simple and hadnt changed since Hamilcar. Meaning Carthage would put up a post lets call this cartel. And it said what was being catered and how much they would earn. Every once in a while they would pay just half knowingly theyd upset the mind and lead to revolts. The survivors were paid a percentage more. Then theyd import more soldiers from wherever and pay them half. People were down for the grandiose adventure. UK did the same with the Nordics until they got full control of the military through the scots. Then half the UK went with Spain.

Which is why the English system conquered America despite the majority not having been from the UK. They didnt conquer through war. They conquered through gambling debts and exploitation of regionalism. And instead of spreading a cartel they spread a common legal system that benefited trade. Whereas Iberians prefered to have micronations, that were as plentiful as a grain of sand and one couldnt interupt the other. They didnt like legal communication.

If you look at old US maps and you see territories they are areas full of indebtedness. They US forefathers were just more hateful of native Americans and for a long time the area that separated Spanish language territory from English one were native tribal land. They were caught in the middle. The mexicans liked it that way. Because natives were forced out the east by the English they hated the anglos and resented the mexicans. They were not allowed through. Until the US saw the use of Panama. They loved paying the granadines. To let them go through the otherside.

Tennessee. Is a portmanteu of Teneis/Tenes(you have) and see. A gambling problem. Tenessee.

Portugal always had a smaller navy than Castile. During the Castillian succesion war a good chunk of the Castillian navy fought for la Beltraneja thus with Portugal.

>be me
>king nigel nigelson
>spain has most of the americas
>no Problem, i have better tech and bigger navy
>they are only allied with the netherlands
>A joke
>declare war, grab their colonies
>Grand fleet gets btfo by the netherlands
>i will never find out where they got those 20 heavy ships from
