France is comparable in area to Japan. It's a bit bigger, actually (and its population is less concentrated because its geography is much more forgiving). Its population is approx HALF THE SIZE of Japan's. Is France irrelevant on the world stage because it "only" has 66 million people? Was it ever reasonable to cram 1/3rd the population of the US into an island smaller than California?

Of course the shrinking population will present economic challenges but it's not exactly a death knell for the Japanese people.
