"My favorite political system in terms of being adapted to its particular circumstances, successfully, is Singapore. I think Singapore is the single most successful governmental system that exists in the world [...]. "
"This is better than Athens..."
- Charles Munger on Singapore
Was he right?
Carter Taylor
Singapore's system is tied with China's (despite its myriad problems) as my favorite government system right now. However, I view it as incomplete. Its evocation of "Asian Values" is rather shallow and will eventually degenerate into Western liberalism due to ideological pressure. Fundamental reforms are in order to prevent this.
Alexander Cooper
It's just benevolent authoritarianism with a veneer of democracy. A less corrupt version of Putin's Russia.

You know what's the most retarded thing about /pol/tards? They hate the western, liberal nanny-state, yet they somehow admire the eastern unliberal nanny state.
Hudson Gonzalez
>the surface underneath is clear enough. >corruption >no transparency >internal politics on steroids if you want to be successful >get on the wrong side of someone and you "disappear" >doesn't even abide by their own "socialist" principles >Sensitivity overload; any public criticism of a political figure, even if its true, is considered a grievous insult to their reputation and image
Isaiah Murphy
I think this has been said time and again, but while there is undoubtedly a lot worth looking to in Singapore, they have the advantage of being a small, stable non-corrupt, free-market tax haven in an ocean of authoritarian dictatorships. If you live in that region and want to invest, Singapore is really your only safe bet. That gives them a massive advantage that European countries, for instance, can't possibly emulate.
It's like a steroid version of what's going on in Ireland, Luxembourg and Switzerland. Those countries also have very successful economic models on the surface; but once you dig into it, you realize that they are essentially just undercutting corporate taxes to steal investment from their neighbors.
It works great when you are such a small country that even having one major international around is going to provide a massive boost to your economy, but it's unfeasible for larger countries and it's kind of a dick move.
Jonathan Kelly
I like the fact that they are using a lot of AI and stuff to help make decisions about their government policies. Atleast they do something useful with their breaches of privacy.
Aaron Moore
Not to mention that Singapore's metrics aren't that impressive when you compare it to other metropolises instead of whole countries. Some people use it to argue for city states but it's kinda ignoring that if your capital turns into Singapore the rest of your country turns into Malaysia
Dylan Rivera
Some real talk from Lee:
>Multiculturalism will destroy America. There is a danger that large numbers of Mexicans from South and Central America will continue to come to US and spread their culture across the whole of the country. If they breed faster than the WASPs [white Anglo-Saxon Protestants] ... whose culture will prevail?
>Long term for America, if you project another 100 years, 150 years into the 22nd century, whether you stay on top depends upon the kind of society you will be, because if the present trends continue, you will have a Hispanic element in your society that is about 40%.
Strongly recommend reading his talks.
Adam Fisher
I'm not even a Westerner or a /pol/tard. I AM CHINK WUMAO NAMED SUM YUNG GUY WHO NEEDS 50 AMERICAN CENTS FOR DOG BRAIN SOUP.
>corruption Not enough to hinder the carrying out macro-policies. But yeah, it's the main downside to China alongside with its nominal allegiance to communist principles. >no transparency Laws and policies should be clear and descriptive to the public when issued forth but government should not be run by the people. A government ought to serve the greater interests of the country and its people, however it should be for the people, from the people, but not by the people. When the government is incompetent enough, then there is most certainly legitimate ground for widespread resistance from the wider society. >internal politics on steroids if you want to be successful Politics is politics, a miserable but necessary evil. >get on the wrong side of someone and you "disappear" If it's done for corrupt reasons (which happens too much), then you got me there. >doesn't even abide by their own "socialist" principles Even before Deng Xiaoping, socialism was a means to an end. Butthurt nationalism has always been superior to it. Now, not even the leaders care much at all about Marxism and are moving towards Confucianism and Legalism. Unfortunately, the legitimacy of the CCP is grounded on socialist principles, so fully repudiating it is political suicide. There would not be much resistance once it does change though.
Colton Hill
>Sensitivity overload; any public criticism of a political figure, even if its true, is considered a grievous insult to their reputation and image Public political criticism should not be a casual affair. People can do whatever they want on online websites like this Uzbek Dishwashing Bazaar. Only when the political figure dies there should be more freedom for people to criticize publicly. However, the Chinese government is smart enough to not ignore public opinion.
To reiterate, China and Singapore are not my ideal governments. They're just less crap than the others.
Evan Smith
this is also a good point. A city is obviously going to have certain advantages to a country in general
When you compare Singapore to cities rather than just countries, most rankings put it behind Western Europe, Australia/NZ and Canada.
Benjamin Wright
> public criticism should not be a casual affair
You're right, it's not a casual affair, it's a matter of civic fucking duty to criticize your leaders.
Fucking Asians, I swear
Austin Brown

Well, that is why I affirmed "for" and "from". "The people" I mentioned are the common people.
Nolan Green
who gets to decide who the commoners are?
The party leadership? Sounds like a model rife for corruption with few tangible benefits, if any
Carson Cooper
I like the Swiss model the best. It encourages participation, and from the outside it seems to avoid much of the infighting that other western democracies have. Can any Swiss anons tell me otherwise? I'm really intrigued by the system of government
Dylan Taylor
God I hope China makes some dipshit aggressive move toward the Japanese so we can fucking blow up some chinks. Should have nuked China when we had the chance, now their disgusting Confucian "culture" has gotten all over the place. Maybe a stray weapon will hit Singapore. Wouldn't that be swell?
Colton Smith
Of course, for ministers and officials, criticism and remonstration are some of their topmost duties when things go wrong. If they do not do that when good governance is on the line, they should be kicked out. Leaders shouldn't tolerate the craven beasts that are sycophants. On the ground level, commoners should petition the central government to get rid of any bad local officials. However, I don't agree that in normal situations people should publicize political criticisms against the government itself. Especially for ignorant, loud yokels who have no idea what they are talking about and sophists that twist everything in order to confuse discussion. There is no point anyways even in democracies. Individuals like J. Edgar Hoover away with what they want if they play their cards right without higher intervention. Criticism from the public should be a last resort when the government is worthless to the point corruption infects every level of government. At that stage, the government is indeed nothing but a den of glorified bandits that should be replaced by another that will work diligently to provide plenty and harmony. This, his pace is slow but definitely worth it. Shame he didn't have a solution to the chronically low birthrates Singapore has now. Meritocracy (foremost) and reliability are the guiding principles. Field tests and examinations to prove your skills in practical and theoretical aspects of governance. Conducting extensive background checks for personal assessment. I'm on the fence on whether to maintain party monopoly or ban political parties altogether. Political factions are okay as long as they are kept on a leash.
Owen Evans
If you want to prevent the spread of Confucian culture in East Asia, you're thousands of years too late. Should have imposed American occupation when you had the chance :>).

Doesn't matter how long you wait, nuclear Holocaust does a great job of frying culture as well as bodies. The only way to the future of this miserable world is to exterminate the Savage cultures. SEA, China, the ME, anyone who poses a threat to the security of humanity.
Camden Cox
Great, all those things "should" happen. Now who ensures that the government is accountable? You are advocating giving an elite class all of the power, and then saying that they have to be held accountable. By who, you dumb fucking chink? Who's auditing the auditors? Moronic, brain-dead, state worshipping gook. God bless the USA, and God Bless his rifle I can use to blow away any dumb faggot Chinese trying impose their "order" on me. Oliver Myers
As points out, it seems your entire system rests on the infallibility of your leaders.
But let's say they aren't infallible. That they are just as piss poor as what passes for a politician in the West these days:
1. You wouldn't know it, because criticism is outlawed 2. You have no way of removing them, because legitimacy resides in the party itself 3. They have every reason to lie and cheat about their own incompetence and corruption, because there is no independent media keeping them in check, nor any way in which popular demand can remove them.
You mention that meritocracy will decide who gets to hold key positions in your system. How is that any different from how we choose civil servants in the West? Only in our system, the civil servants don't have to fear being put in jail if they disagree with their supervisors.
Nicholas Smith
Makes me legitimately sick. At least this garbage will stay in the cities where it has always belonged, even in that shithole.

If you didn't have the guts to finish off the communists in Vietnam and Korea, what makes you think you won't just slink off and approve more outrageous "social progress" instead of going 14/88? The West lost its chance to make its hegemony permanent.
Brayden Thompson
Hey, I'm no 14/88er. I like American blacks. They may be dumber than average but they don't set up nightmare dystopias in chink jungles. And Mexicans just work like crazy. I just fucking hate east Arabs and chinese-types.

The cultural hegemony of Western capitalism is alive and well, arguably stronger than ever.
Nathan Green
>east arabs Those oil sheiks on the Persian Gulf? Capitalism is prospering but it's slipping from the West. Don't mistake a tool from the hand that wields it.
Charles Wood
there is noting inherent in "The West" that means it has any right to rule over other parts of the world.
The best you can really hope for is what is already there: A system that is the envy of the world, and a culture that seeps into every corner of the globe.
Joseph Cook

I live the same rural, agrarian, maize based lifestyle my Miami ancestors did. Most people here, even the whites, literally assimilated to the Miami culture and they still don't know it to his day. I can ease your mind, then.

The trouble with the Swiss system is that people who are autisticly concerned with politics and especially with single issue politics can get thier idiot views opened up to a referendum, where dumb people can think "DURR day sounds gud!" and vote in all kinds of stupid, annoying shit. Like how it's illegal in many canyons to wash your car on the weekends. Not frowned upon, actually illegal. Why? Because some busybody thought it should be and convinced enough other busybodies to vote for it.

This is a meme, the Swiss elect politicians just like any other oligarchic western state. They have referenda on many of the kinds of policy decisions other country's politicians make by themselves, but in practice this is usually just a method for Swiss politicians to wash their hands of having to actually make unpopular decisions.

Gabriel Reyes
He said that one of the reasons why Singapore needs authoritarianism is because multiculturalism in Singapore will cause chaos without a supervising government that calms and suppresses ethnic conflicts. He also feared that communists would use this ethnic tinderbox to flame an uprising against the government. Therefore, he found a justification to install a de facto one party state.
Owen Myers
The ONLY reason Singapore became a success is that it's strategically located near the Malacca strait.
Lee Kuan Yew did nothing impressive at all.

t. Jared Diamond By that logic, why isn't Egypt or Yemen rich despite controlling access to the Red Sea? Yes, but Singapore and the US have different approaches to ethnic policy. The United States government actively embraces multiculturalism under the melting pot idea. In contrast, Singapore's leaders don't seem to be sentimental about their diversity in of itself.
Brandon Thomas

If and other Breitbart commenters are an example of the Alt Right at large, the problem isn't that they want to be oppressed properly. The problem is that they couldn't give two damns about the Constitution or Civil Rights if someone they really hate is oppressed (Muslims, protestors, liberals).
If China ever gets strong enough and really does invade America Red Dawn-style, some of their first collaborators will probably be Muh Guns, Muh Christ, Muh Free Rights, Muh Trump Frogfuckers. Sure, it's the Chinks but if the Chinks add in a sweetening deal 'and we'll let you do whatever you want with the Muslims and homos,' they'd sign up for it right away.
The approach is incredibly short sighted. Let's say the new state starts fucking up really bad and not just fucking homosexuals. Buildings start collapsing because your friend was given the job and you couldn't care if his experience or quality was bad. Food ends up poisoned without any checks. Shitton of money is spent on a diamond bridge that could have got to a better house for you.
Now if people start protesting, the new regime can say 'these are liberal saboteurs' and the Frogfuckers will probably cheer up the Establishment beating up the libs even as their lives get shittier around them.
