But in that same time Maya culture reemerged with great power in the Yucatan peninsula, and when those cities fell new ones popped up while in Guatemala Maya mercenaries (worked for the Toltecs) of gulf coast invaded the local Maya of that country and established new kingdoms. These cities were destroyed and burnt to the ground when the Spaniards invaded.
