This is due to the socialist belief that wealth = happiness/success and because they believe wealth is zero-sum then success and happiness is too. This explains why they dislike rich people so much, because they believe these people are keeping everybody else from being happy just by having more money. Because of this mindset they are always comparing themselves to others, never content with their own success. The success of others makes them aware of how much less they have and it makes them angry.
Such people can never be happy in a system that rewards confidence and personal merit.
