How did the Normans become Christianized? Weren't they Vikings? Was there any resistance to it like in Scandinavia?

How did the Normans become Christianized? Weren't they Vikings? Was there any resistance to it like in Scandinavia?

They saw that Christian civilization was superior to snowniggotry so they converted.

Are you an inhabitant of the Levant?

Rollo himself converted as part of the deal to get the Normandy. However he seems to have taken his vows not that seriously, history tells of around 100 human sacrifices for his funeral.
Pretty soon the rest of the Normans became the same bigot assholes like all other Christians and that was that.

It was one of the conditions for their migration to France. Come on man how do you not know that.

>Weren't they Vikings?
No.

They were the inhabitants of Normandy, a region in France.

>Rollo wasn't a viking
>Normandy isn't named for the North men

This.

>the entire population of a chunk of France was genocided in medieval death camps and entirely replaced by a band of Viking warriors who reproduced by fucking each other up the bum

>Rollo had a hundred human sacrifices for his funeral
>But those christians are assholes, man.

>Rollo is still a viking and the Normandie is still named for it's nordic settlers
>Frenchies still butthurt

>How did the Normans become Christianized?

They converted to Christianity as part of the deal in which they received Normandy. Regardless of how sincere that conversion was, there seem to be that they accepted the new faith rather rapidly together with the rest of cultural package of northern France.

The assimilation of Normans was so fast that Richard I, i.e. the first duke actually born in Normandy, had to be sent as a child to an obscure household in order to grasp the ancestral language. Apparently no one could speak it well anymore at the ducal court.

For the same reason anyone would convert over time.
The normans who settled in Normandy were, at first, pagans, and many pagan beliefs remained for some generations, leading to local clergymen to flee and complain about human sacrifices being carried out.

But the vikings married the local population. They abandonned their language to adopt the grammar and vocabulary of the franks, and slowly, they were converted, because everyone in mainland Europe was christian.

Still, even if the normans were known for being great crusaders and figting on behalf of the Pope, we can see in their local rule how tolerant they were of other religions. In Sicily or in Outremer, they easily accepted the muslims in their lands, which was very tolerant for the time.

>Norsemen have kids with Frankish women
>Women raise the kids to be Frankish Christians

Vikings were defined by raiding activities. There were actually Christian Vikings.

They integrated with the locals. Rollo and some others still practised paganism for awhile but afterwards they were all Christianized.

Large populations of Norse migrated there. It wasn't just males. I'm not talking le shieldmaidens meme but just ordinary people from Denmark and Norway. That's not to say the entire population was replaced but the Normans were a distinct people within France for a time.

>However he seems to have taken his vows not that seriously

not to mention the more danica

irish were still letting priests marry into the 13th century. people are often very slow in letting go of pre-christian customs

Because the french beat the fuck out of them but let them live, so they joined the strongest side.

basically thisIt was a clash of primitive pagan culture and a new hip religion that turned out to actually be a major civilizing force. The whole point of Normanitas as a concept is basically "Thank God we aren't worthless barbarian shits anymore."

Also the French wine might had something to do with it. Normans were first to export wine in larger number to British Isles ever since the Romans left. They couldn't stand the disguisting beer Saxons drank, they were only used to wine.

>How did a small group of people convert to the same religion as everyone around them

Hmm, really hard question you have there OP :^)

A more pressing question is why are Normans such wandering murderhobos?

Like Normandy is a spawning ground for every adventuring warfreak cunt that goes all over Europe and the Mediterranean looking for a fight to make a buck off.

Is Normandy a shithole that everyone just wants to leave?

Lots of poor, landless knights. In a Norman family a first-born son would usually grab everything while the rest of the sons got fucked.

There's nothing incongruous about Christian vikings.

This. Nordic kings like Sweyn Forkbeard, Canute the Great, and Harald Hardrada were all Christian but that didn't stop them from leading Viking Expeditions overseas.

Other people have explained things pretty well, but I'll just add that Normandy isn't the only place you see Norse peoples integrating into local cultures. The same thing happened with the Rurik dynasty of Kievan Rus, where a comparatively small group of Norsemen were brought into a foreign population, and assimilated relatively quickly into the local culture. The most likely reason for this is legitimization: if you're going to rule the locals you're gonna have to blend in some: talk the talk, walk the walk, accept the faith, etc.

It's worth noting that the Normans assimilated really, really fucking quickly though, as brought up. By the time William of Normandy invaded England the Normans were pretty much completely French. They spoke French and fought primarily with heavy cavalry.
