Personally I find Hinduisms evolution to be a fascinating thing. It's descended from the Vedic religion which is of indo-European origin and is similar to others with deities like Indra who is similar to deities like the Hellenic Zeus and Slavic Perun, and it also possesses stuff such as Soma which is a drink of the gods similar to Ambrosia. Hinduism however is also descended from southern Dravidian religions and because of Indias history has branched into thousands of different sects. There are even sects of Hinduism that worship rats because of this for crying out loud.

I have 0 background in study but here is my theory.
In a polytheistic religion there are going to be hundreds of different priesthoods for the different gods. And all of them are competing with each other so there's constant attempts to say one guy's god out does another guys god. There's going to be constant despiutes about which gods out rank the others, which ones are more importaint in your life, more worthy of worship.
One thing you can do is impress people with stories about how the god your priesthood studies did something really awesome.

There have been tensions between different sects in Hinduism but never about who's god is stronger. The multiple gods in Hinduism aren't gods in the abrahamic sense. There is only one philosophical god but many versions and avatars who have different levels of authority and power. And even the most powerful god's get their shit rekt if the break Dharma. The only supreme god in Hinduism is the universe/bhraman itself, it's laws from where dharma arises are the manifestation. Thats the core belief anyway. A lot of the gods are tribal deities that got incorporated into the pantheon since the belief is that the manifestation of the universe that you worship has no bearing on how dharmic you are or your ultimate oneness with the universe. You're right that folk tales about weapons and great battles got incorporated into the religion but it was with the caveat that the good or bad that certain god's do doesn't effect the worshippers behavior. So if you worship a god who was a amoral in some way doesn't mean that karmic laws won't apply to you for being immoral in the same way.
