Zen Flesh, Zen Bones
Doctrine of Awakening - Evola
In the Buddha's Words
Question for Buddhists:
Why do you worship a fat person?
They don't
Thanks which do you recommend I read first
Das Kapital by rinpoche Karl Marx
Whats wrong with Vajrayana?
its for fucking faggots thats why.
Have you read Journey to the West?
Is that the one about wukong?
Yes, it's about the Monkey King's journey to India. It's also, if you read between the lines, an extended metaphor of the self's struggle to reach mindfulness (read: enlightenment), accompanied by the superego (Monkey) and the id (Pigsy).
Zen Flesh, v good and chill introduction to basic Buddhist principles like disengaging with thought, resisting the urge to over-intellectualize and speculate, focusing on the present, stuff like that.
Doctrine of Awakening is no-nonsense patrician intro to Buddhism. Evola tells it like it is. He has his biases but no book does a better job of getting across the ascetical heroism of the Buddhist will towards nirvana
In the Buddha's words is precisely that. Not the most readable scriptures but with study and meditation under your belt they make a lot of sense
But real talk, practice, that's the most important thing
What about Vajrayana?
Get for buddha
Is it worth reading the "monkey" translation or should i read the 1000+ page translation
Thats for taking the time to write that I appreciate it. What exactly do you mean by practice, like attending a Buddhist temple or just general focus on mindfulness?
i'm reading "foundations of buddhism" atm. it focuses mostly on the basic doctrines of indian buddhism that are common to all buddhist schools of thought. seems to be pretty good
Mindfulness, meditation (there's different kinds but simple breath meditations are a good start: back straight, inhale, exhale, let thoughts pass, don't swat at them, try to repress them, good, bad, or neutral, just let me go and go back to your breath, do this long enough and you'll experience your mind without any thought... shit is so cash), and try to internalize your understanding of impermanence, the ubiquity of suffering, just all the shit you'll be reading about, but don't chase anything, just live deeply and mindfully in the moment and everything will take care of itself
Buddhism is the complete antithesis of autistic system-building and squabbling over doctrinal minutia, just practice and keep your feet on the ground
I forgot to mention: What The Buddha Taught was excellent and I was really surprised how accessible and yet in-depth it was. I'd start with that and go to Zen Flesh from there
Too edgy for mainstream buddhism.
>lel you can get enlightenment in one lifetime if you do esoteric meditation and rituals like going to caves for years at time
REEEEEEEEEEEE
Buddha was skinny af. He fasted for 50 days once, and usually (if not always) skipped lunch.
Anyone have any opinions on Yuttadhammo Bhikkhu? He has fully jumped on the Burmese Mindfulness bandwagon. It's hard for me to gauge if he has really made any developments in his practice. He just comes off as cynical and arrogant to me.
Vajrayana is a subsect of Mahayana.
Start with Dhammapada.
Also Shurangama Sutra is a Mahayana text. Here's an audio book of the first chapter: youtu.be
I watch him regularly, but he speaks very low which is the only displeasure I have form him. I do not see him as something else than a vipassana practitioner in asia.
Anybody have any particular sutras or readings of sutras you like to meditate with? Is meditating with a sutra chant playing not real meditation?

I made them into several audio files which I will upload soon.
well first you must say what is the goal you wish to achieve through meditation and what is your faculty to concentrate?

Foundations:
"What the Buddha taught" and "Theravada Buddhism" by Richard F. Gombrich.
Buddhist philosophy in-depth:
- "The Selfless Mind" by Peter Harvey
- "Selfless Persons" by Steve Collins
- "Analytical Buddhism" by Miri Albahari.
Once you have that all squared away you're ready to tackle the Pali Canon. You can either read chunks of it English, for this I'd recommend any of the things put out by Bhikku Bodhi.
If you want to read it in the original Pali however:
- A New Course in Reading Pali: Entering the Word of the Buddha by James Gair
- Pali Grammar for Students by Steven Collins
Which I'm told work alongside this course: bodhimonastery.org
I should probably make a chart for future reference

meme book. don't start with it.
Theravadins believe you can reach enlightenment in one life time too. It's not meant to be some supernatural thing.
Georg Grimm: Buddhist Wisdom; The Doctrine of the Buddha.
>brilliant
>More techniques, definitely much more samatha, much more magick, more autiobiography, and other odds and ends thrown in for good measure. It should fill in some parts of the middle better thant he first one did, I hope, and explain a lot of why the book is what it is. I think the original was about 150,000 words, and this is over 320,000, so it is over twice as long. I think it took longer to write than the original, but it is hard to remember at this great distance how long the first one took. The editorial process was certainly more, um, elaborate. The index alone is about 20 pages at 8.5x11", and how long it will be in print form I don't know. The cover will be basically the same. I think the format will be larger to accommodate the graphics, perhaps that size known as Crown Quarto.

Read Clearing the path by Nanavira Thera. He was an eufag who moved to Sri Lanka to live an ascetic life. He actualy attained stream entry and wrote some texts on various buddhist subjects afterwards. If you want some useful insight into right view, he's prolly your best bet. Much better chance of not being mislead than "buddhist intelectuals" who just think and dont practice.
I know you're trolling but Budai isn't Gautama
en.wikipedia.org
>Start with Dhammapada
pls avoid. so many people make bullshit arguments and base it on something in the Dhammapada. Even on dhammawheel someone was claiming recently that the Buddha taught there was a soul from his Dhammapada exegesis.
>Once you have that all squared away you're ready to tackle the Pali Canon
Or, you can just start with the suttas. I'll add this site to your list of Pali resources:
buddha-vacana.org
you obviously need to read a grammar book too though
Really though OP you should probably just start reading suttas. Here's a good one about meditation and the eightfold noble path:
suttacentral.net
Lester "Theravada Buddhism in Southeast Asia"
Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance
Interesting to see what Veeky Forums suggested as compared to some of the lists that Veeky Forums has created in the past.
>Doctrine of Awakening - Evola
I wonder just how many Asians actually take that crank seriously?
Either way
KEK
have you any serious criticism to make as to either the content of that book or Evola's exposition other than muh Evolameme?
