Because in the United States, the Democratic platform includes language pertaining to equalizing treatments of all Americans, regardless of race or religion. You'll be hard pressed to find SJWs in places like China or Cuba which are severely economically leftist.

Democratic voters don't believe enough has been done to reach that equalization and therefore the candidates who want Democratic votes run on those same issues.

You may as well ask why the right wing talks so much about guns and taxes...but I suggest you do that over on /pol/, as this is neither history nor humanities related.

It's clear in the context he didn't mean "white people don't know what it's like to be poor" and that what he actually meant was "white people don't understand the reality of black inner city life."
