I'm not sure what made anime so big in Japan. I do know that Japanese culture was shaped by a huge boom in the interest on the electronic market after the second WW. People were allowed more freedom to seek what they wanted to do. Before and during the War, people only cared about expanding the empire and army service. Few businesses created art and what not cause art was seem as weakness. But like I said nobody cared much about the army after the war and people had more time to be creative. I think that is how anime and manga got popular cause people had more freedom to be artist. Don't take my guess as truth a lot of it is just my personal theory about how Japanese culture came to be . Also idk why Japanese people like western culture maybe because of the same reason Westerns like Japanese culture. Because it's different and unique? Again just guessing

Since America pretty much made Japan their creation post WW2 they saw a lot of American culture from a limited PoV. Disney blew up with them because of how cute it was I heard and they tried to mimic it which probably was a big influence on the anime art style.

Ah the most coherent reason that I've heard is that cuteness is massively valued in their culture, the concept of kawaii and so things that the west would consider childish can be considered cute and hence acceptable. Also this is mixed with the unforgiving nature of Japanese society, very long and dreary work hours and life. Because of this a good portion of their media focuses on an idealised childhood/highschool life. As a form of escapism and nostalgia.
