Serves him right, he trusted a protestant.

Oh wow I didn't even know this happened.
Any recommendations for the history of Jews in england?
Preferably one with good historiography.

It's actually a Jewish man who has served his Huntingdon seat for the last 16 years

>Christian supporters believed the conversion of Jews was a sign of the Last Days and the readmission to England was a step towards that goal.

What the fuck is wrong with protestants

...

Wow Cromwell being a massive faggot, who'da thunk it?

Yes, the influx of Jews turned out to be a boon for the Anglo who discovered they had grown more in common during their 371 year absence.

Though the Anglo-Judaic union really came to the fore under Charles II with the rise of the freemasons under the patronage of his illegitimate son Charles Lennox. This was followed by more good fortune, the glorious revolution brought the Jews of the Netherlands to London and their financial innovations like the bourse (stock exchange), this was also the time of Isaac Newton and the Royal Society, the first steam engine, the Bank of England and a maelstrom of intellectual works and media allowed by the bill of rights which triggered a flourishing of what would become capitalism.

It was a comfy time.

>Christian supporters believed the conversion of Jews was a sign of the Last Days and the readmission to England was a step towards that goal.
>Evangelicals

conversion of the jews is an ongoing utopian dream of protestants, and to them a sign of the apocalypse coming as your greentext says. its a similar rational behind why all those crazy fundamentalists support Israel

>Eternal Anglo invites Jews to Britain
>Becomes world power for the next 300 years

Wait! What? I thought having Jews would destroy your country?

I hate protestants

Did you read More Desire Than Our Owne Salvation?

Are you seriously suggesting that Britain became world power because of its Jewish population?
You think Jews came to England because they're so charitable and wanted to help the anglos?
Or is it more likely it was a desirable place for them to go, the USA's comparatively large Jewish population is a result of immigration that occurred when the USA was already a very powerful (and profoundly anglo-saxon) nation.

no, what's that?

jews should've stayed in spain and portugal and assimilated.

>jews should've stayed in spain and portugal and assimilated.
i don't get it. the jews DID assimilate. the spanish inquisitions wasn't about kicking the jews out of spain, it was more about weeding out what were called new christians or "conversos"; jews who had converted to christianity but were suspected practicing in judaism in secret still. some conversos didn't get tried at all. many assimilated entirely while others kept some jewish traditions (though over generations the substance got taken out of them). this latter group we identify as marranos, who had assimilated totally except for the few practices, as i said already. of course, another group entirely fled spain and settled in the muslim world, the ottoman empire being a popular destination, or settled as secret jews in southern france (with some assimilating into southern french culture and another group of sephardic jews persisting into the modern era), or in low countries which were held by spain, particularly the dutch republic which split off from the spanish empire in the late 16th century. Some jews came to the low countries as crypto-jews and others practiced openly in the tolerant atmosphere of that region, but when the dutch seceded from spain you see a lot of new christians throwing off the religion and returning to jewish practices. this sephardic community neverthless became highly assimilated in dutch society and became very successful within it. Funnily enough, as opposed to the highly assimilated and successful sephardim you see ashkenazi immigration to the dutch republic as well coming from the baltic, where the dutch had a huge mercantile presence. unlike the sephardim they were poorer, less educated and didn't assimilate as well, to the disgust of the sephardim. the two groups didn't mix and had cultures at odds with each other.

Now to get to the OP, with Cromwell's decree you had sephardic jews moving to London. (this is speculation hereonout given my reading on the subject is limited but the events line up in my mind and this was typical practice historically against the low countries, which were always in economic competition with each other over textile production, over control of world trade and over financial services). Certainly, Cromwell had his religious motivations. Protestants, especially the nonconforming kind, had an infatuation with the old testament not as common to the catholic tradition. English protestant tradition obsessed with the idea that their country was "elect nation" like the israelites, under god's divine protection from its catholic enemies and assigned a special destiny to spread the christian message to the world. so basically, they saw themselves as old-testament israel, and the most wacky among protestants actually claimed they were the lost tribe of israel. though that latter idea was a ninteenth century development it was inherent in the english nonconformist tradition (i.e. protestants with beliefs outside the accepted doctrine of established anglican church, which was traditional in outlook it not ouright "catholic" from the perspective of the protestant dissenters/antiestablishmentarians [other names for nonconformist protestants]). Cromwell was absolutely through and through a protestant dissenter and if there was one consistent theme in his religious policy it was the idea that individuals should have absolute freedom of conscience and that the church of england (i.e. the anglican church, although anglicanism was a very unstable thing subject to the whims of fashion and the eccentric beliefs of kings of the church hierarchy of the time) should accomodate as wide a variety of beliefs as possible. (cont.

Even though the jews were not protestant, too, Cromwell's hope was that the jews, with the persuasion of conscience coming from the freedom of religious inquiry, would eventually come to adopt.
There was also the economic motivation. The Sephardic community of the Netherlands was wealthy and financially savvy and contributed modestly to the dutch republic's ebullience in the 17th century and although a protestant-ruled the two countries were mercantile rivals. The English economic elite, historically, resented the economic vitality of the Low Countries where they had exported their wool for processing into elaborate textiles. England, indeed, was something like the wool factory of Europe in the middle ages, although Castile came to rival them in this regard by the late 1300 and through the 1400s. In the 1500s, however, and perhaps earlier for all I know, English kings and merchants made a concerted effort to break the Low Countries' monopoly on textile manufacturing and to process their own wool. It paid off in the long term, though the policy had is up and downs. Among some of the things that helped the English get the upper hand were protectionist measures against netherlandish textiles to nurture their own industry with their own domestic markets. Another fortuitous event was the Dutch Revolt and the French Religious Wars. Although hundreds of thousands of brabantine and flemish protestants migrated to the netherlands (where, they'd make something like 25% of Amsterdams' population in the 17th century), England also absorbed many immigrants from the southern Netherlands, along with their advanced knowledge of textile production and marketing. The Huguenots also immigrated to parts of England (Devon, I think, as opposed to the flemish in east anglia iirc) where they also brought a similar variety of useful talents and knowledge for industrial production.

This wasn't a clean process; contrary to what you might expect, the english didn't welcome fellow protestants with open arms and the country was quite xenophobic. Still, the knowledge brought by immigrants had an immeasureably useful impact on english industry, as it had in the Dutch republic and Switzerland, another haven for french huguenots and other fleeing protestants. The jews come into this because in the 1650s, during Cromwell's rule, anglo-dutch tensions increased and exploded into war. It was a war of economic resentments; resentment by England of the dutch fishing in english waters (herring, it needs to be stressed, being one of THE major industries behind the Dutch "golden age"), resentment of dutch attempting to bypass english protectionist policies in their north american colonies, dutch shutting the english out of the east indies trade, competition over the spoils of a declining spanish empire. The dutch for their part must have hated the english protectionist policies meant to shut them out of its markets, like the Navigation Act passed by Cromwell. There also was the dutch resentment at england throwing its weight around (being economically and population-wise the bigger, though gdp per capita was probably a lot lower). There was also political issues linked with some exiled Stuarts taking shelter in the Dutch republic. So, anyway, to get to the point, poaching the successful jewish community from the dutch republic may have been another way for Cromwell to get an edge over their economic rival. Indeed, the Dutch weren't above such cynical policies either. The republic blockaded Antwerp in the Southern Netherlands for most of its 80 years' war with Spain, effectively destroying what was at the time the financial capital of Europe and replicating, with the aid of southern netherland immigrants, the formidable financial market in its biggest city, Amsterdam, with the very innovative financial products that had made Antwerp so dominant.

Now it was England's turn. By the late 17th century, the London financial market would come to eclipse the Amsterdam one, and this was accomplished because the Dutch Republic, being a small population, could not handle the terrible strains of waging war against Britain and France in this period. As a matter of fact, it would spend the 18th century servicing its debts accrued from the century before. And just like the jews played their small part in dutch success, the establishment of jewish financial families in London probably played its small part, too, in establishing England as the financial giant of the 18th and 19th centuries. It's no small coincidence that David Ricardo, one of the classical economists alongside adam smith, was of sephardic jewish descent and his family had immigrated to england from the nethlerands. Interestingly, though, Disraeli was also sephardic but his family had lived in Italy after the expulsion in 1492. That said, Disraeli's father had been educated in the Netherlands, presumably among the sephardic community there. Moses Montefiore and Adolphe Cremieux (french, though) were also notable sephardic individuals who achieved financial and political successes in their respective countries.

Wtf was cromwell's problem?

get off thsi board

i admit i had that thought while writing it, but i thought it was worth exploring some of the context and showing how different historical trends were tied together.

Meant More Desired Than Our Owne Salvation. It's just a book that tracks apocalyptic Christian hopes to modern American Evangelical support for Israel. A big part of it is the break between English and American protestantism around the reintroduction of the jews in England.

If it interests you, some guy made a two part explanation of the book.
