The Ui Neill dynasty held the title of High King of Ireland from 846-1002, and 3 more beyond that. they also held the title since 479 but thats contested. And beyond 1166 the O'Neills specifically held Tir Eoghain (more or less modern day county Tyrone).
However it isn't one family name, its actually quite a few that are bundled into Cenéls, and then into the northern and southern branches.
All of the Ui Neill families can claim ancestry from the founder of the dynasty, the only special thing about the O'Neill branch is that they kept the "original" name.

I think I read that the property of the Dutch crown was nationalised and then is lent in perpetuity to the Crown. So the palaces are run by the state but occupied by the King and whatnot. Also they would be given a stipend by the state.

The reality of it is that the Dutch royal family are said to be one of the richest familys in the world with things like Dutch Shell or whatever it is ( the oil company) being held, perhaps in majority, by the family. Also idk if they pay tax. I think I heard that the Queen pays her tax but its a symbolic sort of thing. She's not obliged.

I'm from an old noble family, with my father holding the title. We have precise records all the way up to the early 11th century, and a village around the family castle (also originally from the 11th century) with our name. We sold the castle and like half the village to cousins, though. Never been a particularly important or rich family, but we a had military tradition, and we participated in some way of another in almost every important event our country has gone through. Most likely is that a cadet from a local noble family (that is now exctint) was granted land and a title of his own by the local duke, probably after some military achievement, possibly as a way to protect a local important abbaye.

I think it's neat to know who my ancestors were and what they did. But people I know who are also from noble families (family, former classmates) take it far too seriously. The signet ring and the surname with a nobiliary particle can be an advantage, though, I won't deny that.
