What's the reason for sex to be such a taboo in so many cultures?

I find that the more taboo it is the more it leads into an insane sexuality (excessive masturbation, promiscuity, etc). It also has stupid consecuences like in those countries were a kid is told that he wasn't conceives but brought by a seagull or whatever it is. It also leads to an over idealisation of sex, which is just another natural process like eating.

Even if it were for social order, sex being normalized as a topic doesn't really affect marriage or lead to promiscuity. A person can be educated about sex and still have a calm and sane sexual life.

Is there any study or something on this topic? Are there cultures where sex isn't taboo? How do they manage in that case?

Having more of a cultural taboo does not make people act out in more perverse ways than more lenient ones. It simply makes those actions more noticeable and chastised against the "pure" backdrop of the community. In more permissive cultures these things would seem less prevalent because they go unnoticed or unchallenged by its members who let it slide. For example the sexually liberated polynesians practiced incest and pedophilia almost as a rule. With most young boys losing their virginity to their blood aunts.

Inheritance, responsibility, and power, mostly. You had to have clearly defined line of inheritance and succession, and, if you don't know whose son is whose, you can't have that.

There's been a few primitive cultures that didn't pick this up, where every child belongs to the village as a whole and the like (or even stranger, the belief that more sperm from more men made for a stronger child - thus women were passed around a lot), but they never got very far.

There thus might be something to be said for the psychological advantage of a stable household, where the child has a single primary nurture figure and single authoritarian figure, a model of male and female to follow and learn the cultural morays of interaction from, and it certainly gives the parents more power over the destiny and makeup of their child. So in this sense, some degree of restriction on sexuality is beneficial all around.

It is the opposite of what you have said. If sex is not a taboo, unless you have a population who is well educated in Ethics, it will lead to more promiscuity, since uneducated people see it as "something you do to feel good".

There are two reasons why promiscuity is bad:

1- For the same reason why over indulging in any other pleasure is bad. Over indulging in pleasure tends to increase your desire for it. You need it more, the more you indulge on it and you need stronger doses. And this is bad for you. Large desires that can't be fed leads to suffering. And it leads to people doing things they would later regret, such as cheating on their spouses.

2- Sexual relationships involve more than just pleasure. It involves procreation, pair bonding, etc. By reducing sex to pleasure, you end up hurting the other aspects of it.

Statistics say the opposite. Promiscuous people have a harder time in having a happy marriage.

I think the problem with the west is it likes to live on extremes (sexually repressed to excessiveness). Hence people don't have a balanced view of sex and leads to the kind of problems we have today and in the past. Largely, I blame christianity for doing this.
