What separates a republic lead by a dictator from a kingdom or an empire?

What separates a republic lead by a dictator from a kingdom or an empire?

The Kingdom actually has more "checks and balance" than an autocrat.

In addition Monarchs tend to have their own separate source of wealth. Dictators dip their fingers in tax-money.

If you have a dictator then what exactly does the republic do?

Monarchs have a non-political relationship with the people. They are expected to be competent, benevolent, and also a genuinely good person. Dictators generally maintain their rule through force, and thus have very few expectations, and even if the people are used to them or the institution, it's generally a "as long as the economy is fine I'm okay with this" sort of thing.

>Kingdom has a precarious balance between its noble ruling class and the king.
>Empire can be any form of government.
>Dictatorship has one dude leading it all with nothing to limit his power

Reinhard is an odd example as he is the Kaiser, but he got the entire purely out of merit because he took it over in a successful coup. Then he got the best people in each field because unlike most military leaders that take over a country, he realized he knows how to fight a war but not much else.

>ywn take over an empire spanning half the galaxy because you can't stand the thought of an old man fucking your sister's pussy

Is it cannon that Friedrich IV did that? It's never mentioned. For all you know, he was giving Annerose sweet headpats.

do you really have to ask that? It doesn't have to be explicit canon for it be obvious

Anyone else pictured the great men of history, Caesar, Alexander, etc, as Reinhard-like figures in terms of personality before you read about them and discovered that they were just thugs?

Peter the Great and Charles the XII are clearly the most interesting historic figures

I read the novels and yes, he was sleeping with her. It makes special note of how he made sure to never make her pregnant because make of his mistresses had died in childbirth and he cared about Annerose too much to do that to her.

>make of
Many of, I meant

The assumption is that, if you have a dictator in a republic, the reign is temporary or invoked as an emergency action.

In OP's case the dictator of the republic was basically that universe's version of Vidkun Quisling. Then he insulted the wrong man.

I thought the point of this show was picking between a noble, charismatic dictator who cares and a corrupt, out of touch democracy that has lost its way and doesn't?

What kind of kingdom? A dictator has powers that a feudal monarch can only dream of. But an absolute monarch has a comfier seat, because his powers have a shred of legitimacy, which the dictator lacks. Dictators are very often stressed out of their minds because they're surrounded by people who want to replace them.

Sorta, but the show/books still goes on that the republic has merely lost its way. Hence why Yang gives so many speeches about the virtues of democracy.

A dictator in an illiberal democracy would have more checks on his power due to the nation's institutions including but not limited to the legislature, judiciary, military, etc. Monarchies differ insofar as whether or not they are dynastic or not. Assuming authoritarian states, a dynastic monarch is if nothing else still answerable to their family, who could theoretically replace a poor ruler. Non-dynastic monarchies and empires may not and probably will not have such checks on the power of the ruler.

Ah that makes sense. I forget but doesn't the dictator win in the end? Or is it the cult? So democracy is stalled until the next Blondie comes around? Or the empire is around until of collapses on itself like the beginning of the show with the nobles?

Its been a long time since I've seem it.

Reinhard conquers all of the universe, crushes the Earth Cult, gives the Barlat Starzone political autonomy and dies.

You forgot that the Queen creates a Parliament

He wins but then filename related. But things were essentially set up by him and his wife so that the Empire would become a constitutional monarchy after he dies.

The anime never went that far. Reinhard just tells Hildegard do what she thinks is best. Could be different int the novels though.

This. dictatorship originally meant something along the line of emergency executive powers

And a general with a hard on for Republicanism

You sound like a cuck

Shitty show with outdated ideas about the state and politics.
It's just silly romanticization of authoritatian rule.

Well keep in mind that it was written in the 70s, the world was very different back then.

Tanaka's stuff tends to get overrated since his specific brand of politically-focused epics don't have a lot of competition, and in the case of logh the quality of the adaption elevated it a lot.

81-87

a republican dictator is elected by the people
an emperor/king is a dictator cuz of nepotism

>>cinncinatus

That was publishing, he said he started writing the series in the late 70s.

Ah, my mistake

You were still right though since because it was a 10 volume book series, he didn't finish writing them until the mid 80s.

Neither Sulla nor Julius Caesar were elected, yet they were dictators of a republic
Not to mention that many of the dynasties founded during the Roman Empire were founded through force, not nepotism

The way they legitimize themselves.

The dictator annuls the definition of the republic.

I literally have bar brawls every night after talking about the Great Man theory aggressively with other patrons.

So Veeky Forums, can terrorism change the course of history?

There is literally such thing as a republican dictatorship

Yang was objectively the most based LOGH character

Does anyone else wish all those 3rd world dictators would rename themselves to Kings and other royal titles?
Instead of some weak ass titles like the Chairman of the Council or President?

SIEG KAISER

SIEG KAISER REINHARDO

DIE KAISER!!!!

>had died in childbirth
What kind of nonsensical retarded future is this?

SIEG NEUE REICH

It already has

One without aliens where all the buildings look like they were built in the 18th or 20th century.

Seriously, i am too young for this. If the star is right and i am a teen with internet access to watch this in translation, the impact would be far greater. Shame to ask, but most the teachings and insightful remarks are adapted from actual philosophy?

>“There is a man alone, without family, without children, without God....He builds legions but he doesn’t build a nation. A nation is created by families, a religion, tradition: it is made up out of the hearts of mothers, the wisdom of fathers, the joy and the exuberance of children. [Of Germany under Hitler he says]....an all-swallowing State, disdainful of human dignities and the ancient structure of our race, sets itself up in place of everything else. And the man who, alone, incorporates in himself this whole State, has neither a God to honour nor a dynasty to conserve, nor a past to consult....
For a few months I was inclined to believe in National Socialism. I thought of it as a necessary fever. And I was gratified to see that there were, associated with it for a time, some of the wisest and most outstanding Germans. But these, one by one, he has got rid of or even killed....He has left nothing but a bunch of shirted gangsters....
This man could bring home victories to our people each year without bringing them...glory....But of our Germany, which was a nation of poets and musicians and artists and soldiers, he has made a nation of hysterics and hermits, engulfed in a mob and led by a thousand liars or fanatics....”
t. Wilhelm II.

Yeah, Reinhard is obiously based on Napoleon
This pic makes it even more obvious

A republic by definition has a (usually codified) constitution. If a "dictator" comes to power he will either be subject to a constitution and the checks and balances within it (see USA) or he will get rid of constitution and thus become a dictatorship (Wiemar republic) and ceasing to be a republic.
In short you can't have a dictator in a republic unless the dictator abolishes the constitution and then makes a new constitution that allows for a dictatorship. (In doing so ceasing to be a Republic as it first becomes a dictatorship, then a Republican dictatorship [which is a meme in of itself and not really a thing people do]). You can't go from Republic to Republican Dictatorship without first becoming a dictatorship which is in conflict with what you are saying.

A kingdom may also have a constitution (UK) but tends to be uncodeified so not as important as a Republic who often hold their constitution in super high regard. A king (and emperor if his country holds territories not claimed as part of his nation) will historically have to answer to a ruling elite (later the middle class which is where we are currently) who he governs through (see pretty much medieval history or Draco and the Athenians) and thus has to appease without making too powerful in order to govern effectively but without threat. (usually through patronage, enfranchisement, ect)

>if any among you has the courage to shoot his emperor, then here he is

That line really did date the show, but I guess the counterpoint here is that LoGH is set in a world that experienced a very different early 21st century.

Then again the assassination of that guy via neutron bomb in 2707 would probably fit the definition of "terrorism"
