Not american, what's the run down on Stonewall Jackson?
One of the greatest chinks to ever live
Really lived up to his last name
He was a crazy religious fanatic that was hated by his men because he was automatically strict
Run with Stonewall or be run down by Stonewall
That would be J.E.B Stuart. One of the best cavalry commands of the war killed in 1864 at age 31. Biggest mistake was not reporting to Lee until the second day of Gettysburg robbing the army of valuable information, but I think people focus too much on that. The one big blemish on an otherwise good career.
not stonewall jackson, that's Jeb Stuart.
I think he was Lee' favorite officer
Another one falls to the perfidous anglo and his propaganda
hated by his men
"This is the first sight we had of Stonewall Jackson, riding upon his old sorrel horse, his feet drawn up as if his stirrups were much too short for him, and his old dingy military cap hanging well forward over his head, and his nose erected in the air, his old rusty sabre rattling by his side. This is the way the grand old hero of a hundred battles looked. His spirit is yonder with the blessed ones that have gone before, but his history is one that the country will ever be proud of, and his memory will be cherished and loved by the old soldiers who followed him through the war."
Co. Aytch by Sam R. Watkins, Chapter I
Doesn't sound like someone who was completely hated by his men, sure they hated him at first for pushing them so hard, but once it started to pay off in battle, they loved him.
nothing wrong with being a manlet
It wouldn't have really made a difference either way. Lee lost the battle when he failed to seize the high ground on the first day.
This is true. That is why I say that people focus too much on it. It would have helped, but not enough to win the battle.
Napoleon, Huey Long, LKY, and Musso all already posted
I like you guys.
Pic related is my idol above all the others tho

Looks like Frank Underwood
What could trigger the confederate more than Sherman?
Honestly, fucking why? Monarchists, constitutionalists, republicans, social democrats, socialists, and Russian nationalists shouldnt like him. There are only two reasons you can like him:
hot, stylish, rich, absolute monarch
represented russian orthodox christianity pretty well and is still acting propoganda for it
reasons not to like him
couldnt hold power
couldnt win wars and sucked a strategy
couldnt feed people
failed at absolute monarchy and consititutional monarchy
failed at relinquishing power in safe way
didnt even want to be there
failed to protect his family
allowed social injustices, corruption, and classism to occur under his rule
even though it prob didnt happen, he couldnt stop the rumors about him being cucked by a magical priest
Looks like he didn't do shit during the actual war. You gotta at least burn a city or two to gain scorn from the other people.
Agree with user here - Poor lad wasn't up to the task, didn't even want to be tsar and definitely did not want to have to reform an entirely shit massive state into something competent.
TAKE THIS BACK RIGHT NOW
A superhuman seriously, what he accomplished is irreal. I'd planned to name my catamaran Humboldt & Bonpland (had to sell it very fast kek).
Unironically made France great again for a while
One of the greatest heroes in the Union's history, and an even better man.
being so manly they name a tank after you

You should have listened to him President Davis
Seriously underrated emperor, he was the hero Rome needed, but not the one it deserved. Makes me angry every time I think about how he was assassinated.
Give me the quick rundown
Suvorov is easily on my list of people i admire, i think he deserves the praise he gets.
also very nice choices itt
I like you.
why would u admire a public masturbator
Why do you admire him?
"It seemed as if, in that thoroughly prosaic age, one of the Homeric heroes had reappeared."
Becasu he doesn't give a fuck. Truly a free man.
Why wouldnt you?
he was a tragic hero for me.
Spent an entire year reading about him, god damn this man was based as hell.
I know that he was able to achieve a lot thanks to his fathers hard work and earlier preparations, but still to conquer so much in such a short time, while winning every battle, is no easy feat and is quite admirable!
There is a lot to admire about Bismarck, he is a very accomplished man and of great historical importance.
I know you think you are helping Veeky Forums, but you're not, you're part of the problem. Please leave.

t. Maria Theresa
Interesting choice, why him?
If you don't know about the siege of Szigetvar I feel bad for you.
One of my favorite 20th century European statesmen.
Little known facts:
- He was an adrenaline junkie who loved danger.
- Personally knew Tukhachevsky, the two were cellmates.
- Loved cats.
- Had a daughter with down syndrome whom he dearly loved.
- Very competent tank commander and military theorist.
Zrínyi was based. We Hungarians named a tank after him back in WW2. It turned out to be a very effective and reliable weapon despite how obsolete it looked.
Zrínyi assault guns took part in a lot of desperate battles. Their crews typically had good morale and the commanders were usually very competent and slightly eccentric officers, although many of them had their own Szigetvár. So I suppose, Zrínyi Miklós or Nikola Subic Zrinski was pleased by them.
Allah = God
I'm a right-winger, but Tito was impressive as fuck. Balls of steel.
Because he literally invented intersectionality.
Hello my Magyar friend this time no putting your language into our education >:(
I'm pretty sure the Zrinski's were bilingual but ethnically Croat.
tfw have only heard of Nikolas Zrinyi because of the Colbert Report
Good evening, Horvát friend.
No hard feelings, I hope? We went a bit overboard with that Magyarization thing, I know, sorry about it. Learning Hungarian should have been optional for extra credit instead of mandatory.
Still, we had some fun times together along with our occasionally abusive bully of a big brother, Austria.
Isn't it that the annoying faggot? Why did he talk about Nikola? xD
Yeah honestly if the Serb didn't kill the prince the Austrians were thinking of creating a 3 way kingdom. Austro-Hungarian-Croat Empire which actually sounds odd honestly. Hungarian politicians didn't want it and I honestly don't blame them it would go against Hungarian interests. Trianon was really bad on you Magyars I feel bad for you guys you got fucked over the most.
New kingdom without Austria this time :^) ?
I think they know that he was a Croat, but it's sometimes common practice to "translate" names of historical individuals into more local versions. Like how Hungarian King Istvan II is called Stjepan here in Croatia.
I concur. We were strong together and we'll be strong again. Besides, the only notable difference between our peoples is the language.
Croatia joining V4 when?
I hope the west falls honestly.
It's only a matter of time. And it's such a historical necessity that it would happen even if neither parties would want it for some reason.
You have a problem saxon boi?
no Marshal Ney
You disgust me Veeky Forums
during one of the charges beating his sword against the side of a British cannon in furious frustration. During the battle, he had five horses killed under him; and at the end of the day, Ney led one of the last infantry charges, shouting to his men: "Come and see how a marshal of France meets his death! It was as though Ney was seeking death, but death did not want him, as many observers reported.
It was the final year of highschool, and i was reading a history book of his.
After that i looked him up, and he was everything that i wanted to be in life.
Lawyer, professor, historian, writer, MP, and in his later years he headed the government in exile in London.
His father, though a prince of Portugal, was sort of an uncultured strongman, so he made sure Pedro II was given the best education possible. As Emperor, Pedro II mostly had the chance to rule as an absolute monarch, but chose to allow democratic institutions to function even when he disagreed with them. This is especially notable during a time when the rest of the continent was filled with caudillos. During his time in office, Brazil won three wars and stood up to Great Britain. He oversaw large-scale modernization and infrastructure projects. He also set up the process by which slavery would be ended in Brazil. He traveled around the world and around his country, sometimes even leading troops into battle himself. He was just a really good person.
I actually admire pic related for holding fast to his beliefs even when his arms were broken by the Medici. I also think this www2.idehist.uu.se
The arch-Anglo himself, champion of the British Empire, the father of Rhodesia, CECIL RHODES
He was Imperialism personified
The world is nearly all parcelled out, and what there is left of it is being divided up, conquered and colonised. To think of these stars that you see overhead at night, these vast worlds which we can never reach. I would annex the planets if I could; I often think of that. It makes me sad to see them so clear and yet so far.
Came here to post this. Thanks.
Also, this guy right here
Ah fuck posted him too. Oh well. You can never have too many cortes pics posted in a thread
Isn't it that the annoying faggot? Why did he talk about Nikola? xD
back when his show was funny, he got his fans to rig an online vote to name a bridge in Hungary after him, at one point during the voting he called Zrinyi (who was the only person with more votes than him) an asshole. Then after he'd won the vote, the Hungarian ambassador to the US came on his show to give him the conditions he had to fulfill to get the bridge named after him, which were to prove that he spoke Hungarian, apologize for calling Zrinyi an asshole, and then be dead. He couldn't do the last condition so they named the bridge after Zrinyi anyway
Very competent tank commander and military theoist.
This is infuriating to no end.
Im in the process of readong his biography and it really shows the why and how the entire military on the Frenchs side completely collapsed during the war. And in the middle of this mess you have De Gaulle (who was only a colonel at the time) who developped an entirely new structure for the army to be based around mechanised forces with infantry as supports which could have challenged Germany, way more versatile in its use than the static Maginot line and it actually managed to do some damage when he was put in charge of one of the few mechanised divisions France had built, although too late. He had it, but for ten years the other members of the military did not listen to him, the scars of WW1 were still really present in their minds and the idea of an indestructible wall was reassuring to both them and the general populace.
stalin tries to assassinate him multiple times
just tells him to fuck off
gets that marshall plan money and support from soviets
gets mariachi bands to preform for him

he pretty much single-handedly managed the biggest French foreign policy disaster in centuries by facilitating the Germans uniting
Not Marshall Davout
The guy was the only Marshall who refused to turn his back on Napoleon no matter what, unlike Ney or that bastard Victor.

The greatest naval commander ever to sail the seas

Truly, truly based. A scholar and a troll
he had his flaws and of course he failed ultimately, but his vision was admirable.

"What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others."
Fuck the Macedonians and Alexander this guy right here is the one i look up to when i think about truly great leaders i can respect.
It's almost criminal how under appreciated he is or how over shadowed he is by Alexander
he's my great great great great great..... grandfather (by marriage)
the nig has a hitler mustache. cmon
Jesus thought he was god. same thing.
I don't admire him, but I do think he was fun
Loved him so much in HS my friends and I tried to build a boat so we could be pirates on Lake Michigan like him
What's the name of the biography?
I prefer his brother whose ideas on education make him easily one of the most important figures of the last 200 years.
Possibly the greatest man of my ancestral homeland, Yi "Horatio Nelson of the East" Sun Sin.
The Business Plot was a delusional Marxist/anti-imperialist taking things wildly out of context. It was almost assuredly just semi-drunken rantings ("that goddamn pink Roosevelt, why we oughta take him out and just put in our own government what what") that didn't mean anything beyond that.
Mr. K? Jax?
Knowing what we know now, and that the Second World War was the most important conflict in human history, his conviction and foresight were not only admirable, but necessary.
With the exception of the Japanese internment camps, I find very little to criticize, and can only see a man with a great love of his country and of the values which define it.
As planes and ships and guns and shells are produced, your government, with its defense experts, can then determine how best to use them to defend this hemisphere. The decision as to how much shall be sent abroad and how much shall remain at home must be made on the basis of our overall military necessities.
We must be the great arsenal of democracy.
For us this is an emergency as serious as war itself. We must apply ourselves to our task with the same resolution, the same sense of urgency, the same spirit of patriotism and sacrifice as we would show were we at war.
Dead serious, he makes me deeply proud to be an American. Him and Lincoln.
What about trying to pack the Supreme Court?
Truly a great man
Frankly, his goal was to push through unconstitutional New Deal legislation. I totally understand the critique, as regardless of his intentions, the checks and balances of this country are paramount to its integrity.
However, from his point of view, the New Deal was necessary for the rejuvenation of the soul of a dying country, and if packing the Supreme Court meant fewer hungry children and unemployed laborers, so be it.
German unification was a long time coming, bud. It almost happened in 1848 under your precious Orleanist monarchs, but barely didn't (Fuck your pride, Friedrick Wilhelm IV!).
Napolean honestly did nothing wrong. He played the political and military game well, his greatest achievements IMO were more domestic rather than foreign. He brought France back to glory on a world stage.
For Queen and Country.
In my honest opinion, he wouldn't have won so much had the Nips shown at least a modicon of respect for the Korean war effort. Honestly, they just naturally assumed the navy was unimportant compared to the army. Fucking autists.
To carry off of OP's point, even though I hate the politics of FDR to a degree, I repsect the FUCK out of this man who gave so much for his country.
I mean what greater man is there than a cripple who spends 12 years in the hardest possible job for his country, during the greatest time of strife that century?
His packing of the supreme court, like OP said, was his way of strong arming the SCOTUS to pass his new deal legislation.
I'm actually okay with that. Here's why:
I view a need to change the presidency from what we have now: a Divisive man who brings more scorn than recourse, to a near King-Like figure.
George Washington was wrong, to a degree. A nation needs a central figurehead to center around, even in times of peace. Britain has Lizzie II, and Germany, for better or worse, has Merkel.
FDR was a King, for 13 years (longer than any president). When he died the nation fucking mourned for months and months.
He lead the hopes and dreams of the American people, and lead it towards his vision. For better or for worse... he was our King.
I know you think you are helping Veeky Forums
nah I just believe Germany is satanic
Unironically Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
Now he's known as a renowned late medieval painter. But in his time, he was just a simple yet skilled craftsman.
It's fucking amazing, and he'd never have believed you if you were to tell him that he'll be famous one day.
My favourite Cadillac racer
He was a Renaissance Painter.
Well his style certainly differed from the more famous renaissance painters. To me, it seems a bit more medieval than that of his peers, say Van Dyck or his own sons and grandsons. My opinion though, regarding his work. His lifespan falls into the renaissance epoch, you are right.
I hope he's looking up at a helicopter.
He was a bit of an idealistic faggot, but you can admire him for his sacrifice
Don't forget the garbage socialist governments that shat upon the military.
Mémoire de guerre
Why are South Americans addicted to shitty fucking dictators? Best dictator of a fucking generation and they tell him to fuck off.
That doesn't make any sense, how the fuck do you even translate a name in the first place?
But Pedro II ruled for a very long time.
The End of History on the shelf
Honestly, it's not him who was to blame.
one of the first abolitionists in Pennsylvania
genuinely believed in Quaker ideals to the point that other Quakers didn't like talking to him
did not use items made by slaves
did not talk to people who had slaves, and was known for walking out of social events if a slave-owner turned out to be involved
against animal cruelty, and because animal cruelty was hot at the time (18th century lol) he made every item and meal himself just in case
one day a follower came over to the cave (yes he lived in a cave) and said that the Quakers were going to expel slave owners
after decades as a lone voice in the wilderness, he had finally won
and so he died
Benjamin was one of the only people in history to have a 100% self-consistent life. He never contradicted his beliefs in word or action. I have to admire anyone who takes their worldview so seriously they're willing to shit in a cave for multiple decades until people start agreeing with him out of sheer exhaustion. He was only four feet tall but was able to stare the whole world in the eye until it blinked.
The war was decided after Antietam anyways, that was the closest the South ever got to winning the war.
This is now a /scihis/ thread
Why do history nerds always have this disturbing fetish for psychotic dictators?
A lot of the answers are ironic.
A lot of the answers aren't psychotic.
A lot of the answers aren't dictators.
Some people daydream about having a lot of power and not being held to account for its use.
Joseph "throwing fags in Gulags" Stalin was better anyway
I know it never would have happened but I honestly believe he should have been king.
I admire him more for his expose
I can scarcely begin to imagine what he'd think of modern Britain.
Even if you're technically correct your anime image makes me want to ignore your point.
GEORGES DANTON (1759-1794)
But he is a prophet, not a god
best Fascist other than de Rivera of Falagne
He was an actual devout christian unlike Hitler with his Positive "Christianity" heresy
Just finish reading Thucydides, Pericles and Brasidas both stand out in that book as truly admirable leaders.
"Make no show of cowardice then on your part, seeing the greatness of the issues at stake, and I will show that what I preach to others I can practice myself"
I can never figure out if I wish he lived until WW2, or if him having to see what happened to Romania would be too fucking depressing
Truly an extraordinary man
Being so manly they name the BEST TANK OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR after you, no less.
Agree that Bismarck is admirable, he was aggressive like Wilhem or Hitler but was able to show more restraint and realized just because you might win a war doesn't mean you will be in a better position afterwards. He screwed up in the Franco-Prussian War by overestimating France's ability to have a cohesive government.
have you read seven pillars?
Ive owned it for like 3 years tried reading it twice. Dont think i ever got much farther than the introduction.
He did everything right, but he had too many enemies on too many fronts. Despite this, he maintained the integrity of his empire, which was the most glorious in Europe since the days of Justinian.
Not yet, but not for a lack of interest. I just haven't had the time. I'm roughly familiar with his life and influence

Not only is the autobiography good, but it's a sort of humanistic masterpiece, that survives the test of time.
His homely and loyal wife is set for life.
This is of course not to ignore the rest of his life, I just think that it's a fairly decent example of his character. I just wish I had that sort of inner strength, that moral courage, but I know that I'll probably always come up short. Half-cringing at myself, I have more than once found myself trying to emulate the example of the man.
Also, he was a really feelsy guy:
I do not sleep though I sometimes dose off a little. If up I am talked to and in my efforts to answer cause pain. The fact is I think I am a verb instead of a personal pronoun. A verb is anything that signifies to be; to do; or to suffer. I signify all three.

Arab generals were pretty good.
Top tier husbando, there.
He also knew what was the superior weapon, apparently.
not that user but Lee basically turned Singapore from a small post colonial dot on the map to a regional powerhouse.
