While it never really got off the ground, King David Kalakaua of Hawai'i wanted to found a Pacific Empire made up of all the Polynesian Islands plus some other Pacific Islands it could acquire, in an attempt to unite them all against European/American Imperialism.
His plan was to convince the various Island chiefs to join together for mutual strength and make Hawai'i the head. The future of the new state would all be secured by being under the protection of Japan (Kalakaua visited and was a fan of the Emperor Meji)
Unfortunately, Meji (respectfully) refused Kalakaua's offer, and his continued pursuits toward his goal -
including an attempted intervention in Samoa that almost led to a war with Germany - ironicallh weakened Hawai'is ability to retain her sovereignty. When he died, Liliuokalani was unable to retain power and local capitalists (for lack of better term) led a coup that ultimately resulted in Hawai'i's annexation
I think it would've been neat if he had pulled it off
