The saddest story I ever read was that of an Alaskan tribal who was converted to orthodox Christianity by Russian settlers. He was later found by Spanish explorers, who tried to torture him into converting to Catholicism by cutting parts of his body off. They sliced off his toes, fingers, one by one, until finally they gave up and cut his hands off completely. When he still refused to convert, they disemboweled him. It's the most gruesome story of utterly pointless cruelty I've ever heard.
