It actually had a German unit there by accident (in passing after a refit)

I saw in a movie a few weeks ago that the German unit was supposed to be shipped out to somewhere further North like 3 days after D-Day
Is that really what happened? Thought it was fiction honestly.

Because Americans

The Germans that were going north was heading to the place where they have prepared the most. If you didn`t know the allies were using captured informants from Germany to make the Germans they will be attacking further north. The allies would have taken them with surprise anyway, they came under a storm, something the Germans didn`t anticipate.

Because the americans weren't used to running so long, and their ankles buckled under their weight

americans are incompetent

should've let our empire crumble so we can become socialists that get bullied by starving indians, huh

They refused to get help from hobo

the plan was to land tanks first, but something went wrong and the men were forced to storm the beach, completely soaking up the defensive fire

Those floating tanks?

Rear Admiral Hall "It's a crime to send me on the biggest amphibious attack in history with such inadequate naval gunfire support."

Air support was even worse. Bombers missed their targets. Only 3 bombs hit beach and German defences.

Yep, the DD tanks. The current was unexpectedly strong and they were under intense fire so deployed too early and sank before reaching the beach.

Better question is why Canadians think they're hot shit for landing at pic related...

...instead of this.

Man, this picture always gets me when I imagine some of the soldiers were even younger than I am when they faced this hell

It is Canadians, they'ven't done anything significant since torching the white house so of course they'll glorify whatever scraps they got from yanks&brits.

I can’t help but think the soldiers, both those who landed on the beaches and those who were dropped inland, were carrying way too much stuff. Why do first wave attackers have to carry all that shit? A gun, ammo, a few grenades and some C-Rations is all they needed, right? Right?

>first wave
>food ration needed

U w0t m8

They also need medical equipment, mine clearing equipment, radios, demolitions equipment, spare parts of all for all of them and multiples of all of them.

well after a few hours of fighting you might want a snabble.

>Just leave them waiting until the next wave with the food arrives, whenever that is. This will be good for both combat effectiveness and morale.
>They might have to go futher inland? Well just let the food trucks catch up with them I guess.

They had NO IDEA when they will be resupplied.
This wasn't a quick raid.

>medical equipment
small med pack each. Plus a medic here and there

>mine clearing equipment
one in twenty. swap out for grenades and/or side arm

>radios
one in twenty. swap out for grenades and/or side arm

>demolitions equipment,
one in twenty. swap out for grenades and/or side arm

>spare parts of all for all of them and multiples of all of them.
scavenge. the rest comes in wth second and third wave

>*would have been
fuck, been up for 40 hours.

>scavenge

What a fantastic idea and a brilliant way to ensure your operation is successful.

it was literally by accident that the germans saw the shit coming. this is why it was such a massacre on both ends.
they didn't think they were going to be hauling ass up a beach dodging MG42s. They thought they were just going to land and run out and secure everything. All of the gear made sense.

Faggots pls
It wasnt an expedition, they just had to take a fucking beach so the massive landing could take place

One can afford not eating for the duration of taking a beach (like an hour at most)

>It wasn't an expedition

user...

You forgot that someone must drop ammo and the medic needs defibrillators to revive

It really wasnt
You took WW2 video games/Saving Private Brian too seriously

Dudes who took the beach didnt go on with chasing ebul nazis inland right after
They sat for the rest of the day on the beach they had captured while the entire invasion force landed

Yes, that's all they had to do. Just take the beach and then they could all go home.

Totally not take the beach and then advance inland and capture important objectives or dig in to set up a perimeter around the beaches.

2hard2fast.

Ya gotta pace yourself, user.

See huge fagget
It wasnt some epic action movie
Once they took the beach, they waited for the rest of the invasion force to land
Food ration just for the taking of beach wasnt needed

>The objective was for the beach defenses to be cleared by H+2 hours, whereupon the assault sections were to reorganize, continuing the battle in battalion formations. The draws were to be opened to allow traffic to exit the beach by H+3 hours. By the end of the day, the forces at Omaha were to have established abridgehead8 kilometers (5 mi) deep, linked up with theBritish 50th Divisionlanded at Gold to the east, and be in position to move onIsignythe next day, linking up with the American VII Corps at Utah to the west.[18]

>Continue the battle

>Were to have established a bridgehead 8 kilometers (5 mi) deep

What did they mean by this?

Assuming of course the invasion went off without a hitch and didn't get called off after the first wave. But nah, leave them there without food. They'll totally keep fighting until they can be rescued without any food whatsoever.

Juno beach and omaha beach are quite similar regarding casualties and in term of "hellish battlefield"

Get some sleep please

haha americans amirite :)

>lose over 300 soldiers against an abandoned island with no japs on it
>eh heh heh heh america's military incompetence is just a f-f-funny meme, r-right guys?

Anyone can cherrypick, you bumbling autist.

This one There were very few defenders overall and the casualties were rather low. Some were just less lucky than the others.
>4000 dead on 100 km

>Why was Omaha deadlier than the others?
>kneejerk reaction is to post "muh americans"
>proceed to defend it with an unrelated event
Pretty sad if you ask me

>implying most of those casualties aren't from hitting a mine

Hey Veeky Forums I found out why Austria-Hungary lost WW1

American education?

Reading comprehension: 0

>the point

>be American

Fucking prussians amirite

>muh gun rights will make me safe
>gets shot and killed by the thousands
Gunfags?!

And this is why people who think the D-Day landings could have failed are deluded.

I love you.

>implying that the gun crime rate in the US isn't almost identical to most Western European countries, if you remove one specific demographic who are shooting at members of the same demographic

Amerifats were not fast enough

>cant keep the nogs on a leash
>get fucked by 'Every1 can own guns' meme
Hearty kek

Are you retarded? You just gonna play sitting duck on those beaches while the germans reinforce inland so they can mop you off the beach the next day? Look at the fucking picture and tell me how far in land the first day objective was.

This thread is 5% history, 95% /int/ shitposting. Mods do your job.

it was filled to the brim with americans

Like your contribution is so fucking good
