What do you guys do for a living? Do you actually enjoy it or are you just doing it to get by in life?
Careers
This is me with my buddy Satoshi
Cyber security consultant
Never thought I'd say it without being sarcastic, but I'm living the dream man. I'm fucking blessed. Every day is awesome, surely it can only be downhill from here.
How do you become one?
I trade shitcoins for a living
Software dev
>Software Development Manager
>No, I'd rather get back to more coding/building
how long have you done it. do you live with your mom?
I'm CTO. It's nice because I don't work very often and can do what I want with my spare time.
Nothing.
Literally live in my parents basement
>What do you guys do for a living?
Finished dental school last year.
>Do you actually enjoy it or are you just doing it to get by in life?
Loving it so far. In 2 months i will have a year of working experience.
Considering my low experience i am making almost 4x monthly average (working some extra days).
Just need to work for a year or two so i can leave the shithole where i am in from to a western euro country for big bux.
What sector?
Longshoreman. Like the work, like the money, hate the people. Affirmative action in the 90's filled my union with worthless niggers and women.
Lawyer
I'm a lawyer, right now I'm reviewing contracts for a telecom. Job sucks but it pays okay and I'm completely unsupervised. I listen to the radio all day and can walk away from desk whenever. I'm trying to get into tax or antitrust law. Or maybe criminal law, idk I wish I had more direction in my life.
Bot and trade crypto
Software developer. Living the dream here too. My job is easy as fuck and my coworkers think I'm a genius because I'm the only person in my department who knows Python lol. I work for a top 10 advertising firm too.
i am a garment Manufacturer. make more than 6 figures plus my daddy is rich. its hard but, i only need to do it for a couple more years then live on passive income that my father made for me. i have no problem riding coattails.
Auditor
I like it, usually work from home on Friday's but I'm either doing field work at the clients office or prefieldwork/report writing from home; can be hectic if you don't stay organized
About 2 months from making a living from my crypto mining operations, with some hydro ops on the side.
God I fucking love 2017
real estate
>Found an interest in hacking at 13, but had a moral compass
>Found vulnerabilities in Government, military and private websites (even found an XSS in Mt. Gox, reported it and gave advice on how to fix it; the CEO personally thanked me in an email. sadfeels)
>Put these on my resume and built a rapport with Government info-sec entities in the process of reporting vulnerabilities legally, ethically and responsibly
>Got offered a job by the executive director of my federal Government's head incident response team
>Put that letter of commendation and job offer on my resume
>Started a degree in cyber forensics and info-sec
>Started an info-sec consulting business during uni to avoid the '5 years experience required' infinite loop
>Got clients / real world experience through my business
>Found an investor, and formed another business doing background checks and fraud investigations across like 4 different continents
>Finished my degree
>Sold my business
>Applied for a dick-tonne of jobs
>Out of around 30 applications I probably got 25 interviews
>Picked the ones I thought were most interesting
>Got hired by a global consulting firm, did a quick stint at their forensic office in my home town and then moved across the country to their headquarters
>I'm 21, life has never been better, I must be one of the luckiest people alive, every day I thank the universe for how things turned out for me
Was hard work though, spent 6 years running a business, working two jobs (day/night, 16 hour days 7 days a week) & doing a double-major full time.
There is no shortage of work. Distinguish yourself, be proactive with demonstrable expertise (i.e. your whitehat vulnerability reports and the proof to go with it).
Learn as much as you can about cyber security and only pursure it if it's your absolute passion. This is because the threat landscape evolves substantially every day, and the only way you'll keep up efficiently is if you love learning about it.
good luck!
Feature film. Fun job but the pay is quite average
I'm a cook. I work during the winter and summer, and take 2 months off in the fall and spring to travel or go home and say hi to my family.
I do enjoy it, most of the time. I don't really care what my job is so long as I'm working with friends, and most of my friends are cooks. So, we just find mountain towns that we wanna live in and move there for a season for work. Finding housing is difficult in Crested Butte (my current location), so I was homeless for most of the summer. Luckily all that meant was that I was camping in BLM lands. Working at resorts gets you a lift pass, and last winter the restaurant was on the mountain, so I snowboarded to and from work. Sometimes I get a few runs in on my break. I smoke tons of weed and listen to music while I make food. Most seasonal workers are single so getting laid isn't difficult lol. It's not for everyone but it's ideal for me.
t. former desktop support technician (sucks)
trading since may, have $50k already. and yes living with parents
>working two jobs (day/night, 16 hour days 7 days a week) & doing a double-major full time.
Nice LARP, but good job nonetheless.
College student studying econ
Trying to be full time musician with my crypto earnings hopefully sustaining my lack of steady income.
I'm a resident, I do enjoy it, I was never good with people but now I have to do with so many of them that I see the types and variations and it's awesome, humans are legit cute.
Machinist/ mechanical assembly tech. Also do some electrical work. Don't fall for the blue collar meme kiddos it pays well enough but its not worth giving up your health for. Now I'm sitting here wondering if i should go to eng. School in my 30s.
Writer. Trading cryptos in the meantime.
lmao if shit dosent work out I'm going infantry
Your story sucks, I expected some trauma that introduces a shift to the dark side with an epic global hack ensuing or something.
I'm teaching myself security stuff, but it's hard. I already know advanced bash scripting, and enough python 3 to make simple scripts. I've really only used it for gui automation. Assembly if pretty damn difficult, but I'm working on it for amd64. All I'm really capable of atm is doxing.
Honestly, I can't see myself working a desk job again. My last one totally ruined it for me. Boss was a crazy meat head on tons of psych meds screaming about trump on a daily basis. I hate authority, and thus, I hate the government (but mostly because it's over reaching). Money isn't a huge deal to me, so long as I can eat and sleep. I got into crypto because the technology is so impressive, turns out everyone else thinks so too (or maybe they just see $$$)
Been a teacher for 5 years, getting pretty repetitive although I like the job. Not sure if it's possible to ever change my profession. On the side I'm a crypto holder.
what/who do you teach?
software engineer as well
no college degree and making six figures at a fun job truly is the dream
I live in the Netherlands and I teach Dutch to my students in high school.
I still don't know what I want to do with my life
Having no purpose is worse than having a purpose you don't like
What are you gonna do with that econ degree if your music career doesn't take off? You're not gonna just be fucking around with crypto, right?
traveling is fulfilling, you should consider seasonal work. It takes like $2000 to get started, but once you're in it you don't spend much. Most of my expenses go toward camping equipment/travel.
If you love the technical side of things (really technical) then get right stuck into it.
Otherwise, there's a huge HUGE demand for governance in information security. It's what matters most to a business. For example; a web server vulnerability, a website which can be defaced and an insecure app all relate to business risks such as
>financial risk
>reputational risk
>regulatory risk
>compliance risk
>etc. etc.
Having the governance structure and framework to support the response to outcomes engendered through such vulnerabilities is what a business is willing to pay big money for. An incident response planning review is more valuable to a business than simply patching existing holes.
If you have the underlying technical knowledge (clearly you do), and would be interested in exploring how it can be applied in a wider business aspect, consider information security management from a broader perspective. You'll need to translate technical findings into plain English and then into business language so the board, CEO and executive directors will understand.
These avenues prevent pigeonholing yourself into pentesting, code reviews, vulnerability assessments and OSINT work (which I happen to love as well, by the way). Just a headsup.
I never attended lectures or tutorials, and am convinced I only passed the mandatory attendance units because I maintained regular contact with co-ordinators and showed enthusiasm. Seriously, I did work at a restaurant during the day and a bottleshop at night, while running my own business with every spare second I could, as well as somehow finding time to study. Wish it was a LARP, full time employment literally feels like a holiday now. That's when I knew my previous lifestyle choices were completely fucking wrong.
Why stoop to third-world-level debauchery. I'm trying to help, not fuck shit up. Plenty of opportunity and easy to make money illegally, so why don't you? Probably some of the same reasons as me
Probably look for something in fintech. That's last resort shit tho lol. If OMG takes off, I probably will never have to worry about money.
whats Garment user ?
Data analysis but bitchboy version- excel vba stuff & 1% SQL
Doing it to have money to invest in crypto
Hopefully this works
:)

Sous Chef at Wendy's the Gourmet Burger
20$/hr
I am disabled so I can't drive otherwise I'd be a realtor those fuckers make bank for doing jackshit.
I pretty much just like the technical stuff, that's why I got into it. As soon as we started studying standards/compliance in school I got so bored. I just wanna know how stuff works. I don't wanna tell people what to do, or write up incident responce plans, or risk management, or vulnerability assessments. These phrases alone trigger me (though I realize they are necessary). I'd rather it be a hobby :[
How does someone with no degree or qualifications beyond school grades get into a tech job such as system admin or IT support? been looking and they all require experience, also apprenticeships are incredibly difficult to get around here
Bioinformatics Engineer, basically pretending to be expert in mol bio, statistics and programming. Pay is nice and work is cozy AF. There's a clear path forward etc. I like it
I write software. I love it. I probably would be getting paid more if I hated it.
Working on crypto-exchange bot for fun in spare time.
gimme some equifax info. how fucked are we?
>wendy's
>sous chef
>$20/hr
what?...
Find some idiot who thinks you're more valuable because you haven't been conditioned by another company yet. So, just keep looking, I did it.
Also a lawyer. In terms of my profession I've "made it". I'm at a big law firm working at a satellite office which means tons of pay and little work.
I'm astounded by how little I work and how much I get paid. But the work is absolutely atrocious when it happens. Mind numbingly boring shit and paper pushing. So I browse Veeky Forums all day and do random spurts of 15 mins of work in between shitting and fucking around.
I guess it's okay, but it serves me right for fucking around too much in college and getting shit grades (This is why everyone becomes a lawyer btw).
I make well over 100,000 and I do secretary work. I'm looking for more out of my life in terms of achievement and life improvement etc so I'm hoping crypto and especially OMG will allow me to retire very soon
Good stuff mate. Get into pen-testing, look at obtaining your OSCP, or (even better) your CREST certification. Avoid ECH. Get a CISSP, avoid CISM. Good luck!
I used projects on github as experience.
i've been working on OSCP for years, it's hard. i've never heard of CREST but i'll check it out. Thanks for the tips good sir :]
simple and easy
For the consumer, bretty fucked mang.
What's most likely is that equifax, if you're affected, will have to pay for identity monitoring / fraud protection (that is if they don't become insolvent in the mean time).
What you can do is contact other credit reporting beareus and request a freeze on your account, so that no one can access / change any details. In my country, this is free, and can be implemented for 90 days. Pretty sure it's free in the states as well, but do a little homework.
You should pay particular attention to your credit reports over the next month. If, suddenly; there's a homeloan you don't remember taking out, get the wheels in motion.
Software program manager, work from home.
Crypto is just something else to do when it's slow instead of shitposting and masturbating.
I'm in a similar boat. I work for a company that does IT consulting. I get paid quite well but the truth is I only have about 5-10 hours of actual, real work to do per week. So I spend most of my time goofing off on Veeky Forums and YouTube. On the one hand, it's nice that I get paid so much for doing so little. I can take things easy and have very little work related stress.
On the other hand, I feel like I'm sabotaging myself by not working hard. I'm not practicing and improving my skills enough which I fear will hurt me when the time comes to find another job. I worry that eventually I'll be "found out" that I'm only doing a small amount of real work and will be let go, though I've worked here 5 years and it hasn't happened yet. I also feel like I'm stealing from the company by taking so much for so little work, but if the customers are paying and they're happy, I suppose I can't say they're wrong.
I want to move into a job that actually challenges me and is demanding, something that can give me a sense of achievement. Goofing off on Veeky Forums is fun but gets old after a while and I feel guilty about having squandered so much time. But then again I also don't want to give up such a cushy position or go through the grueling job search process. Not sure what I'll do. I almost secretly hope I'll get laid off to force me to find something more suitable.
teacher
£20k after tax (take home)
proper shit money
14 weeks off a year is nice though.
trying to bot myself rich with crypto - not working =[
Quantum computing and augmented reality. The later makes me a Software Engineer officially, but I'm a physics PhD at heart. Right now I write Python bots and blockchain related scripts in my free time.
what can a project even be? just started learning python and it seems to me that every project will have already been done by someone else?
That's pretty sweet.
there are lots of projects you can join, starting your own requires a good idea. So, have some good ideas probably.
I'm going into my final year of university doing electronic and electrical engineering.
Did an internship this summer and already signed a contract for a graduate scheme for a software dev position, will be making £36k a year at 23 years old. Feels good man.
best-selling author
i work from home on my laptop, best gig ever
Editing a big reality show. It's fun and the colleges, lunch and offices are alright. Wage is just decent. It's my first long time editing job (6 months+).
Hoping to get into feature feature films or commercials where the real money are within a year or two. Either that or color grading/motion graphics
only got $5k in crypto. thinking about doubling that and live cheap for a few months
hey, an actual non crypto thread
Just graduated 3 weeks ago in Economics, any advice appreciated
Currently have a position in california gas company lined up for late october start as data analyst for 60k. Dont want this job because a. i am an entj/negotiator type of person and b. Ive done harder work, I know I can try and get up to 70-80k as first job out of college
Im looking at some big firms for potential consultancy side, possibly KPMG/Grantthorton/deloitte(no connections on that one)
I could also do credit side of banking, my grip on finance is dusty though. I want to manage/consult outside of sales.
background:
>head manager of food service, >shift manager at a restaurant
>project management for family constructiom business
>sales and contract work for synthetic turf
>owned and ran a biz writing/essay writing tutor program at multiple universities
most relevant experience
>COO/head of operations and events at a small software tech company of 15ish employees, another 25 under contract work, and 5-10 interns under sales,
>negotiated contracts, investment deals with angel investors and VCs, ran company events that were $10k-90k projects, managed everyone outside of CTO, did everything the CEO should have been doing before I got there
How fucked am I due to being thrown into that small business role while in college? My goal is to find a corp to learn that structure and get my MBA/finance paid for and work my way up into upper management consultancy and eventually C-level where the executive position actually means shit.
I feel my experience is so sporadic compared to most biz admin grads who interned their way out, im kind of lost in where the fuck I am supposed to throw the dart on the board.
60k in loans, I aim to pay off in one whole year so I can wife a girl up.
Holy shit, are you me? The only difference is that I got raped hard in the first half of the year with work and realized that my company/department is extremely dysfunctional. I tried interviewing for a few jobs, but haven't gotten past phone screening stage, which has been tough to deal with. So now I'm trying to get my shit together and learn other skills, but work is in full swing and I'm lazy as fuck so after work I just want to relax. I'm trying to fix that too, I guess it's just a habit that needs to be built up.
im one of those faggots everyone hates because they actually got rich from imaginary money. technically dont do it for a living anymore but yes it was very fun while it lasted.
I just got a degree in biology and can't find a job to save my life so I shitpost on the internet hoping that crypto will one day make it so I don't have to work
wow, impressive shit bro
>degree in bio
>can't get a job
pls tell me this a meme. I thought bio was a good choice. Why can't anyone seem to get a good job in it?
stop asking questions like this and how much you make on Veeky Forums.
All youre going to get are
iam a stem grad making 200k a year
sounds like you're further along than I am, at least you've done some interviews. I keep thinking about it, but then think "why go through all that stress when I've got a good thing going on". Problem is that I don't think this good thing can last much longer. The company I work for is already in trouble. I've been late getting my paycheck for the past three months now. I have to start dipping my toe in the water sooner or later.
Since I don't get enough assignments at work to improve my job skills, I've been doing some online courses on Udemy and others to try and improve my skills lately, but I don't have the discipline to do it longer than an hour or so a day, so progress has been slow. Like you, I am a lazy fuck so I like to relax during off hours. Trouble is my on hours have also become my off hours. Also, I've found those cheap online courses tend to be very basic and cover only the most elementary topics, so I haven't really been able to learn much. I've been thinking about signing up for some more intensive (and expensive) online training to help me build my skills.
I'm not really sure what the right move is in my situation. I like getting paid for doing little work, but I also have to think about my future and what my next career move will be, and what I need to do to get there.
When will you kill a lion? Please timestamp it here when you do it.

Just a kid with a billion dollar dream..

up until recently when i had a breakdown i was a funded phd student
now i'm unemployed but still not ready to hunt for jobs yet/beg my uni to take me back
before that the only job i've ever had (aside from tutoring people for a bit of cash) was working at a tailors which was probably the cosiest job i'll ever have
Have you tried government? CDC or state/local equivalents. You could also do forensic work if you can stomach it. Pharma is where the big money is at though you might have to do grad school.
I sell shirts with custom print. Make $20 per shirt. Shipped 200+ this week. Was a good week
Doing a PhD in applied math. I procrastinate a lot, but I like the work (when I actually bring myself to do it). I don't know what to do afterwards. I'm think of retiring early to some low cost country.
Are you the nigger outside of every concert venue?
Medical device sales.... Really do enjoy it. I get to shitpost here, trade crypto, eat free lunch and make bank.
Web Developer here. I do sites for Dentists.
I really enjoy my job because I get to create something and I'm good at it.
It can be a little repetitive at times, but I continue to learn something new every day so that keeps it interesting.
Pretty good other than the constant feeling that I will be self employed on Crypto one day and that I can't stand working for someone.
>Software tester
I just want to fucking retire early
lower enlisted member of the US air force
i fix plumbing on military bases its shitty work sometimes but the hours are comfy
That is chump work. They sell shirts for about 15 per, that's about 5-10$ profit margin. of course they are likely moving more volume but you won't see a young neet selling shit outside a concert, would probably get robbed.
If you're still in school you should absolutely work on finding some kind of research assistant work with your professors. I mean there's probably like a dozen openings between upwards of a thousand students vying for the positions, but hey whatever
>realtor
It's difficult to get into this profession because you have so many middle-aged housewives becoming one because they think the same thing as you.
There is an over-saturation of the profession, it's highly regulated, requires education and state/national testing, and you have to be an affiliate broker for a while before you can even apply to be a "realtor".
The top real-estate agents do very well, but that is a small percentage compared to the number of people starving.
I was looking at a property the other day, and the agent was driving a beat up piece of shit Honda and looked like she was having a rough time. She practically sucked my dick to get me to buy the property. (She was a disgusting hag unfortunately).
If you can get in the door, and convince some retard in HR that you're worth a damn, then you're golden.
However, you're competing with thousands of other applicants, and they will more than likely turn you down.
Even if you know someone in the company it has become increasingly difficult to get a job in the corporate world because of "muh nepotism" etc.
>(This is why everyone becomes a lawyer btw).
How the hell did you get into law school if you dicked around in college? Slam the LSAT?
Work in Client Management for a Sellside Brokerage/Research provider
Best bit about it is reading the work of our Analysts as we are widely known as the best research provider on Asian equities. Also pretty interesting being involved in Mifid II negotiations.
Currently studying for the CFA as I hope to move towards an Analyst/Fund Manger role in the future.
>you have so many middle-aged housewives becoming one
fucking hell this is true.
>i am an entj/negotiator
No one gives a shit about your little reddit personality tests.
Do the fucking job, and shut the fuck up.
>not worth health
this. everything I work with can and will hurt you even when properly used. a typical installation for pic related involves trenching, use of a gantry for fuel tanks and the machines themselves, getting in and out of confined spaces, that's not even considering the electrical work (if you're replacing someone else's work this is a way bigger hassle).
don't even get me started on HVAC
Hey there, Veeky Forums. Looks like I might need to change careers soon due to circumstances out of my control. Anybody know any decent paying jobs that are in demand right now?
I don't give a shit if it's trade work, hard labor, whatever. I can grab some technical certifications if I need to real quick. I live in the Houston area so I have a lot of refineries and chemical plants nearby, too. What are your suggestions? Electrician? Welding? Pipe-fitting?
Not looking to get rich. Just looking for a job that pays OKAY and won't disappear like a fart in the wind.
Powder coating truck parts. It's pretty dull
because it's a meme
Statistically, most people who study Biology are trying for a higher degree as well.
I wouldn't hire a Biology student, fuck science fags.
what role are you leaving? nationwide we have a major shortage of certified HVAC installers, I know this for certain. most of the decent ones in the northeast will eventually leave to your neck of the woods in fact because of the constant demand in the south in general.
Get certified in EMS and hazardous waste response. 6 figure job to stitch up rough necks and drive them to the hospital when they lose a finger.
Otherwise wastewater management is a pretty great job and most places will pay for you to get your certs.
i have a net worth of ~£70000 from trading crypto having started with £2000 that i inherited. I work 2 shitty jobs for the sole reason to garner more fiat to shove into my shitcoin portfolio in some vane attempt to be better than everyone else in some way.
also studying theoretical physics in one of top universities in the world (uk), with a gpa im very, very happy with. got good stuff lined up for me in future.
i get my degree soon, but other than that im just a bit of a dumb kid with £70k in the bank (not even in the bank lol). reading some of the responses in this thread make me wish that I was on top of my game more, i cant really imagine starting my own business or anything hyper productive like that.
