It wasn't good, but it wasn't as bad as the documentaries tried to make it sound. Just overall kind of "meh." Would have been a lot better just by omitting the holes in the magazine to keep dirt out.

.30-06 version was literally unsafe, hence why the US troops used the 8mm Lebel version when they actually deployed, and is why so many other countries didn't get a gun in a different caliber and stayed with the 8mm version.

Though the German conversion of captured Chauchats I think were pretty good due to being properly converted, complete with a bitchin magazine with a strut that starts at the front end of the magazine where the rear of the original would have been put in for a bit of added stability
