Go to Coinbase
Buy ETH for USD.

Now you have ETH and it's reasonably secure. Then, to make it truly your own:

Go to myetherwallet.com (be sure you get this exact URL)
Generate new address and save the private key, keystore file and password.
Send a small amount of ETH from your Coinbase account to your new address
Check etherscan.io to see if the ETH arrived at your address
Go back to myetherwallet.com and send that ether back to your coinbase account (just to prove everything is working properly)
Then send all the ether to your address in larger amounts, checking etherscan.io each time to make sure it arrived.

What do if I Coinbase isn't available for me

If they don't sell ETH for USD directly, you can always buy BTC for USD and then trade the BTC for ETH.

ethbet could be 2x-10x but obviously riskier and less liuqidity, so im doing both for that reason

eth has been 400 before so we know it should have no problem being that high

Also, be aware that when you use myetherwallet.com, you're trusting that the owner of that site is benevolent. He could very well change his site one day and have the private keys sent to him and steal everyone's money, but he hasn't fucked his users over yet, so many people use the site.

If you want a more secure way of generating an address and sending transactions, download Mist. It's made by the creators of Ethereum.

The only bad thing about Mist is that if you want to send a transaction, you have to be synced with the blockchain, meaning you have to download the entire blockchain and be up to date on it. This makes it hard to move your ether if you're in a hurry, and that's the only reason why people use myetherwallet. myetherwallet is a service where they run a node (what Mist does) and everyone uses their node to send transactions.

it CAN work that way if you want it to, but you can keep your private stuff private and jsut use MEW to send the transaction

The point is that MEW is whatever the owner of MEW wants it to be. He could change the code one day without telling anyone.

Any time you paste your private key into a browser and click a button in the browser while connected to the internet, you're basically bending over and offering your ass to that site owner.

The money skeleton has all his tokens on one myetherwallet address. I trust.

You can get erc20 tokens like OMG and ZRX in the wallet. You can participate in icos as well.

I actually have a myetherwallet already (used it to participate in the Blackmoon ICO ((yes go ahead and make fun of me))) and you're damn right about making sure you copy and paste your private key in several different locations!!!

But these other 2 x coins you're taking about, are they ICOs or already trading? If they are already trading you need to open an account on another exchange right?

at 0.60 i bought 5 LTC when it was 33 on gdax (the lowest) it show up to 57 in the pump and i cashed out with $10 more than my initial investment

LTC recovers really fast and you make more because it's cheaper than BTC/ETH...

OMG and ZRX are already on exchanges, bittrex and poloniex I believe. I'm bullish on both, OMG is the ultimate meme coin right now with a lot of hype. I actually don't own any OMG yet, waiting for a bank deposit to clear so I can buy some.

You will need to register for those exchanges to buy them, or you could use etherdelta, but that's really normie unfriendly.

When you withdraw OMG from bittrex or another exchange, you send them to your mew address. That wallet holds your eth and the other tokens you have. If you want to deposit to an exchange or send tokens, you send them the same way you would send eth.

Yeah, about your comment about Etherdelta.....

I'm dreading setting this up in a couple of days. Those Blackmoon BMCs I bought in the ICO, from what I'm told, the only exchange I'll be able to sell them on is Etherdelta. The guy told me I'd have to set up a browser wallet extension too, that mew wouldn't work (I set up Metanask which wasn't too hard).

Yeah, it's bad but not that bad. Watch a YouTube video on how to use it and. WATCH YOUR DECIMALS. Don't buy or sell without triple checking the decimals on etherdelta or else you'll be the laughingstock of Blockfolio.

You could also hold and wait for decentralized ETH exchanges like Ethfinex, but you might want to sell sooner depending on your profit needs.
